Whether your passion is simply 'messing about in boats' or cruising along the coast in the very lap of luxury, Tampa Bay boasts some of the nation's top yacht designers and builders. Exalted by sailing enthusiasts the world over, local luminaries like Charley Morgan and Ted Irwin, and companies like Gulfstar, Endeavor and Island Packet, helped make Tampa Bay the sailboat-building capital of America back in the 1960s and 1970s. And then there are the motor yachts - yachts like Trumpy, painstakingly hand crafted in Annapolis until 1973, owned and frequented by captains of industry, heads of state, even presidents. Naval architect Dan Avoures lovingly restores these classics from his boatyard in St. Petersburg. Here, in the first in an occasional series about Tampa Bay's boating industry, we introduce a few of the craftsmen and their devoted followers.
