April 19, MOSI Fossil Fun at Cargill Fertilizer, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Discover connections to the past through a fossil dig. Dig for shark teeth, whale bones and manatee ribs. Wear sturdy walking shoes, sunscreen, and a hat. Bring plastic bags to hold your fossil finds. Pack a lunch, and bring plenty of water. Transportation is provided. Designed for adults and children over 8 accompanied by an adult. Fees: MOSI members $30, nonmembers $40.

April 19, Annual Family EarthFest at Florida Botanical Gardens, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A wide variety of activities are planned, including wildlife and nature tours, birdhouse workshops, butterfly tent, environmental programs and displays, children's activities, plus live music, wildlife shows, and hands-on art activities using recycled materials. Event parking is at 119th Street, between Ulmerton and Walsingham roads in Largo. Free shuttle bus service to the festival entrance is scheduled throughout the event.

April 26, Earth Day on the Bay with the Florida Aquarium Board the Bay Spirit catamaran and help us celebrate Earth Day by learning about Tampa Bay. From dolphins to osprey, stingrays to pelicans, explore the diverse marine community in your backyard. Reservations required, call 813-273-4015. Cost is $14 adult member/$10 child member (6-12) or $17 adult non-member/$12 child non-member.

April 26, "Getting Blood from a Stone", 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., a special presentation at the Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center. Dr. Robert Austin, president of the Florida Archeological Council, presents a daylong workshop on the stone tools and projectile points fashioned by prehistoric Weedon Island residents. Registration is required, call 727-453-6500.

April 26 and 27, Green Thumb Festival at Walter Fuller Park, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. St. Petersburg's largest outdoor horticultural and environmental festival will be held at 80th Street North and 26th Avenue North.

May 3, Florida Friendly Yard Tours, 8:30 a.m. registration at the Pinellas County Extension office, 12175 125th St. N., Largo. Learn how to create and maintain an environmentally friendly yard from homeowners who have earned the Certified Florida Friendly Yard designation. Participants also receive a package of information explaining how they can certify their yard. The registration fee is $5. For pre-registration, call Carol Suggs at 727-582-2673.

May 3, Breakfast with the Birds sponsored by the St. Petersburg Audubon Society at Fort DeSoto Park. Meet at 8 a.m. by the flagpole at the park headquarters. Free continental-type breakfast offered before the walk. For more information, contact Mauri Peterson, 727-546-3733.

May 10, Pasco Audubon Society field trip to Fort DeSoto Park. Meet at Starkey Education Center at 9 a.m. or at the flagpole near the Fort DeSoto headquarters. Bring food and drinks. Migrating shorebirds and warblers should be seen. For more information, contact Don Shepherd at 727-375-5527.

May 10, Fishing Clinic for Women and Kids, Fort DeSoto Park in St. Petersburg. The Florida Aquarium staff will lead clinics on fishing tackle and how to use it properly, including tying various knots, perfecting your cast and discovering what it means to be an ethical angler. Rods will be provided for use during the clinic, but feel free to bring your own. Children can participate in a separate clinic. Reservations required, call 813-273-4015. Cost is $12 adult member/$15 non-member.

May 17, MOSI Fossil Fun at Vulcan Mine, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The bulldozers did all the major work, now practically all you have to do is search the surface for the fossils (but feel free to bring your tools for more digging) Wear sturdy walking shoes, sunscreen, and a hat. May 20, Manatee Awareness Coalition meeting, 4 to 6 p.m., Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council office, 9455 Koger Blvd. Suite 219, St. Petersburg.

May 24, Beachcombing with the Florida Aquarium. Explore nature with help from the staff of the Florida Aquarium. Collect and identify marine creatures and discover how different plants and animals have adapted to salty surroundings. Meeting site is at Picnic Island, approximately 20 minutes from the Florida Aquarium. Be prepared to get wet! Reservations required, call 813-273-4015. Recommended for ages 6 and up (with at least one adult family member present). Cost is $6 members (all ages), $8 child non-member (ages 6 -12) / $12 adult non-members.
