Nov. 11-12, Discover Egmont Key. Located at the mouth of Tampa Bay and accessible only by boat, Egmont Key is unique in many ways. In addition to being a Florida State Park with a pristine, palm-lined beach, it’s also a National Wildlife Refuge, a U.S. Coast Guard station with an historic lighthouse and a National Historic Site.
Once a year, the Egmont Key Alliance hosts “Discover the Island,” providing shuttle boats from Fort DeSoto Park leaving hourly from 9am to 3pm. On the island, 10 interpretive sites offer in-depth information on wildlife and nature, sea turtles and nesting, Egmont Key lighthouse history, and Fort Dade’s military history.
In addition to the interpretive sites, Civil War re-enactors are scheduled to demonstrate living local history with a detachment of Union and Confederate soldiers showcasing events that occurred on Egmont Key and in the Tampa Bay area.
Children’s events also will be highlighted with a pirate mini-carnival featuring a treasure hunt, fishing “pond,” beanbag toss, and photo opportunities in pirate costumes. Also for the first time, Nino Fabiano, author of the historical novel “Egmont Passage: Tale of the Seventh Mystery,” will be on hand to autograph his book. Florida Master Naturalist Programs, Scheduled for 2007 Florida Master Naturalist programs are scheduled in both Pasco and Hillsborough counties in early 2007. Created for people who want to learn more Florida’s environment using science-based information with interpretive techniques so they can share their knowledge. The Pasco program led by Karen Pate, land manager of the Crystal Springs Preserve (a beautiful example of Florida’s special places), will focus on uplands Feb. 26 to March 2.
