Oct. 22, Florida Educator Aquatic Species Collection Permit Workshop, 10am-noon.The Florida Marine Science Educators Association and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission developed this workshop for educators who collect aquatic species for educational purposes. RAINFOREST MASKS OF THE BORUCAN INDIANS OF COSTA RICA
October 21, 6:30-8:30pm Rainforest Masks of the Borucan Indians of Costa Rica exhibit opens at the Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center. A remarkable exhibit featuring intricately handcrafted masks created by the Borucan people of Costa Rica. These ceremonial masks are hand carved using century-old traditions, and the sale of these beautiful works of art has become central to the economic stability of the Borucan people. Through October, two master Borucan carvers will conduct public demonstrations and teach classes. The exhibit continues through December 18. Pre-registration is required for the opening.
Sun., Oct. 23, 2:00-3:00pm and Fri., Oct. 28, 6:30-7:30pm. Lauren Jawer of Mariposa Indigenous Art introduces visitors to the beautiful and decorative ceremonial masks of the Borucan people of Costa Rica. Pre-registration is appreciated.
Oct. 26 and Oct. 29, 10:00am-3:00pm. Mask Painting Classes with Borucan Artists. Participants, under the watchful eye of the master Borucan carvers, paint their own miniature mask. The fee, which includes lunch and all supplies, is $75. Recommended ages: 12 and up. Pre-registration is required.

Oct. 29, 12th Annual Monofilament Clean Up. Audubon of Florida and Tampa Bay Watch team up with boat owners and captains to help clean up monofilament fishing line at selected bird nesting islands throughout the central Gulf coast area. Boat captains will be assigned a site close to their residence or favorite launching ramp and can participate anytime during the day. Volunteers can be matched to boats as necessary.
