SUMMARY:Archaeology of the Anclote River Region
DESCRIPTION:Archaeology Talk: \nInvestigations into the Archaeology of the Anclote River Region \nInvestigations into the Archaeology of the Anclote River Region \nPhyllis E. Kolianos\, M.A.\, RPA\nAlliance for Weedon Island Archaeological Research and Education\, Inc. \nWithin Central Peninsula Gulf Coast\, the archaeology of the Anclote River is understudied and underreported relative to other population centers. In the late 1800s\, S. T. Walker and F. H. Cushing noted the importance of the mounds and pre-Columbian sites on the banks of the river\, and both investigated the Safford (Ormond) Mound\, 8PI3\, near the upstream riverine system\, a reused burial mound dating over 1\,500 years. Almost 20 years of investigations into the archaeology of the Anclote River region reveal some important results that support recent research at other major sites and suggest shifting population settlements and sea-level change. \nPhyllis received her BA and MA degrees from the University of South Florida in Applied Anthropology\, and in 2009 received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the USF\, Department of Anthropology. In her past position with Pinellas County\, she supported the archaeological programs and activities at Weedon Island Preserve and was instrumental in the establishment of the Alliance for Weedon Island Archaeological Research and Education\, Inc. (AWIARE) and their research station at the Preserve. Kolianos has worked for many years with the investigation and recording of area sites\, and has been active with public archaeology projects\, grants\, and archaeological research projects involving Weedon Island’s cultural resources and other lands within Pinellas County. Her most recent and on-going project is the archaeology of the Anclote River region. \nRegistration: https://www.eventbrite.com/o/weedon-island-preserve-cultural-and-natural-history-center-1250121017

SUMMARY:Archaeology Works: Heritage Monitoring Scouts
DESCRIPTION:Heritage Monitoring Scouts (HMS Florida) is a public engagement program focused on tracking changes to archaeological sites at risk\, particularly those impacted by climate change in the form of erosion and sea level rise. Join archaeologists from the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) for this information session to learn how to become a heritage monitoring scout. FPAN will discuss threats to archaeological sites\, how to identify some common site types and artifacts\, and the best way to record and monitor them. \nFollowing this introductory session\, FPAN will do a short hike in the Weedon Island Preserve to do a hands-on training of how HMS tracks data on archaeological sites. For more information on this program go to www.fpan.us/HMSflorida \nQuestions or concerns? Please contact Weedon Island Preserve ta 727-453-6500 or weedonisland@pinellascounty.org. \nRegistration: https://www.eventbrite.com/o/weedon-island-preserve-cultural-and-natural-history-center-1250121017

SUMMARY:Archaeology Talk: Remembering Tocobaga
DESCRIPTION:Remembering Tocobaga: \nRecent Archaeology at the Safety Harbor Site in Philippe Park \nThe Safety Harbor archaeology site (8PI2) in Philippe Park is widely assumed to represent the ruins of the Native town of Tocobaga\, where the Spanish briefly established a mission and fort in the 1560s. However\, the site has only been minimally investigated\, and much of the work is under-reported. This talk describes the goals and preliminary results of recent archaeological investigations by the University of South Florida. \nDr. Thomas Pluckhahn is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of South Florida. His research focuses on the understanding of small-scale social formations\, particularly on the Native American societies of the Woodland period (ca. 1000 BC to AD 1050) in the American Southeast and those of the Swift Creek and Weeden Island cultures of the Gulf Coast. \nThe monthly CGCAS Archaeology Lecture series is sponsored by the Alliance for Weedon Island Archaeological Research and Education (AWIARE). \nQuestions or concerns? Please contact the WIP Cultural and Natural History Center at weedonisland@pinellascounty.org \nRegistration: https://www.eventbrite.com/o/weedon-island-preserve-cultural-and-natural-history-center-1250121017

SUMMARY:Sunday String Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy an afternoon of classical music in the museum at Weedon Island Preserve! \nJoin us at the Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center for a special pop-up classical music performance by Classical Revolution St. Pete! Classical Revolution’s quartet of professional musicians will play a medley of classical pieces in two sets. The first performance will begin at 1PM and last 30 minutes\, followed by a short intermission\, and then a second performance. \nClassical Revolution St Pete was founded in 2017 as a new St. Petersburg chapter of Classical Revolution\, a chamber music organization whose goal is simple: To bring high quality classical music to the people. By performing in unexpected and non-traditional venues\, Classical Revolution creates a space for people to enjoy classical music in a relaxed atmosphere\, introduces classical music to new audiences\, and provides additional performance opportunities to local musicians. \nThis performance is sponsored by the Friends of Weedon Island\, a non-profit 501c3 organization supporting the Weedon Island Preserve through education\, preservation\, and protection of its habitat\, ecology\, and cultural history. \nAll proceeds from this event help support the Friends of Weedon Island’s mission. Attendees may reserve seats at $5/person. Any seats remaining on the day of the performance will be available on a “pay-what-you-can” basis. \n————————————————————– \nQuestions or concerns?
