Join us to learn more about the types of crabs that we find at Weedon Island and why mangroves are important for these special animals. \nThis program will include a presentation inside the Cultural and Natural History Center\, followed by a short walk along the boardwalk to see these crabs up close. \nThis program will be led by Olivia Blondheim\, a Biological Oceanography doctoral student at the University of South Florida College of Marine Science. Her research explores the function of species at the transition zones between habitats. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate International Archaeology Day at the Weedon Island Preserve! \n\n\n\n\n\nExamine ancient artifacts and discover the rich history of Tampa Bay at our celebration of International Archaeology Day at the Weedon Island Preserve! \nThe Alliance for Weedon Island Archaeological Research and Education (AWIARE) and the Central Florida Gulf Coast Archaeological Society (CGCAS) will be on-site with a diverse showcase of pre-Columbian artifacts from the Tampa Bay region and archaeological experts will be on-hand to illustrate the use of these tools and their importance to native populations. \nLocal fossil collectors are encouraged to bring in artifacts such as arrow heads\, lithics\, and pottery sherds for identification during Archaeology Day. No dollar value will be assigned or discussed\, but educational information will be generously shared. \nExplore the artifacts and talk with the archaeologists at your leisure anytime between 10am to 2pm. Also\, check out the 1\,100 year old dugout canoe on display in the Center and visit our free museum exhibit “Connecting People and Place” that tells the story of Weedon Island and its earliest inhabitants. \nThis event is suitable for all ages. Please check back for updates\, close/open\, and event information at http://www.weedonislandpreserve.org/ \n  \nArchaeology Talk:\nDeep Sea Archaeology \nThe deep ocean is one of the last unexplored frontiers in archaeology. Maritime archaeologist James Delgado takes us on a tour of the technology\, expeditions and discoveries\, including Titanic\, lost World War II wrecks\, and 19th century ships at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico. These include sites he has explored and expeditions he has led or participated in\, which he will share as part of a personal tour of the “great museum of the sea.” \nJames Delgado\, Ph.D. is among the world’s leading experts in maritime archaeology and cultural heritage. Dr. Delgado joined SEARCH\, Inc. in 2017 and serves as Senior Vice President. He is responsible for ensuring operational and research excellence\, implementing strategic initiatives\, and expanding the firm’s international footprint. Dr. Delgado also serves as a public speaker\, international delegate\, documentary host\, and major project spokesperson. Prior to joining SEARCH\, Dr. Delgado served as the Director of Maritime Heritage in the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries for NOAA for seven years\, where he implemented heritage programs and active research in the nation’s waters\, as well as promoted outreach and education on America’s underwater and marine heritage. Previously\, he served a four-year term as President and CEO of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology\, the world’s leading scientific and educational organization dedicated to the understanding of humanity’s seafaring history through the excavation and scientific study of shipwrecks. Dr. Delgado was the Executive Director of the Vancouver Maritime Museum in British Columbia\, Canada for 15 years\, and he served as Maritime Historian and Head of the US government’s Maritime Heritage Program for the US National Park Service for four years in Washington\, DC. Please check back for updates\, close/open\, and event information at http://www.weedonislandpreserve.org/ \n  \nGoing Coastal:\nSaltwater Seining \nCome to Weedon Island and get your feet wet learning about what lives in our local marine environment! \nParticipants will learn in the classroom and out in the field about invertebrates and fish that make the waters of Weedon Island Preserve their home.  We will use dip nets and seine nets to collect and categorize local critters. \nParticipants must be able to walk on paved and natural paths for 20 minutes to get to the field sampling site\, and for the return hike. You must bring closed toed wading shoes (keens\, scuba botties\, old tennis shoes)\, and wear clothes that you don’t mind getting wet as we will get wet up to our waists while out in the water. It is also suggested to bring a water bottle\, hat\, sun protection\, and insect repellent. \nThis program is for adults and youth ages 12+.
