SUMMARY:Birding at Bahia Preserve
DESCRIPTION:This ELAPP property\, acquired in 2001\, consists of wetlands which give excellent viewing opportunities of wading birds and ducks.  We’ll meet at 8:00 in the parking lot.  The surface is mostly level and dry\, and the pace is slow.  The one-way trail is 0.7 miles (total 1.4 miles in and out).  No toilet facilities are available.  Wear sun protection and bring mosquito repellent just in case\, as well as water and snacks. \nImportant! Pre-registration is required and participation is limited to the first 10 people who sign up. Please do not attend this or any Tampa Audubon Society events if you have flu\, cold\, or covid symptoms. SUMMARY:Birding at Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this one-way\, eleven mile drive through the restored wetlands along Lake Apopka’s North Shore. We will caravan and will make many stops along the way to observe the many birds and other wildlife that use this area.  With a speed limit of 10 mph\, you can expect the trip to last between three and four hours. There are portable toilets located near the half-way point\, but no other facilities.\n\nDuring winter months more than 150 species of birds regularly use this property. There is always the potential for a rare bird sighting here. We can expect to see   most of the long-legged waders\, many different birds of prey\, ducks\, warblers and flycatchers. This property is considered one of the top three birding areas in the State of Florida.\nWe’ll meet at 9:00am at the Wildlife Drive entrance located at 2850 Lust Road Apopka\, FL 32703. Drive time from Tampa is approximately two hours via I-4 and SR-429 (toll). For those wishing to avoid an early morning drive a variety of lodging is available in nearby Mt. Dora which is about 30 minutes away.\n\nImportant! Pre-registration is required and participation is limited. DESCRIPTION:What is a Christmas Bird Count? \nThe longest running Citizen Science survey in the world\, Christmas Bird Counts provide critical data on bird population trends. Tens of thousands of participants know that it also a lot of fun. Families and students\, birders and scientists\, armed with binoculars\, bird guides and checklists go out on an annual mission\, often before dawn\, to count every bird they can find in their territory of the count circle – owls\, rails\, sparrows\, herons\, shorebirds\, warblers\, hawks\, eagle\, blackbirds… every type of bird. Audubon and other organizations use data collected to help guide conservation action. \nHow can I get involved? \nWe need feeder-watchers and field observers. Birders of all ability levels are welcome. Field observers can join a team covering a portion of the count circle by car\, foot and/or boat. DESCRIPTION:Davis Park is a hidden gem in Brandon just north of Highway 60 off of Parsons. The park has one named lake\, Mead Lake\, and two unnamed lakes. All three lakes are home to breeding Wood Ducks\, Sandhill Cranes and other waterfowl. Black-bellied Ducks\, Wood Ducks\, Black-crown Night Herons\, cranes and other bird species roost for the night in the park. SUMMARY:Birding at Cypress Point Park
DESCRIPTION:Cypress Point Park is a neighborhood park whose famous winter residents are the Brown Boobies that roost on the offshore signs. It has a beach to study shorebirds at low tide and a grassy park for woodland birds.  A bathroom is available at the parking lot.  Paths and the beach are level; it would be best to wear water shoes for wading if necessary.  Take Cypress Street west all the way to the end\, then turn left and drive south pass the office buildings until you reach the entrance; you’ll have to turn right and drive west to reach the parking lot where we’ll meet.  After the beach birding\, you can walk the park\, or drive to nearby Ben T. SUMMARY:Avon Park
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, we’ll visit Avon Park Air Force Range. On Sunday\, we’ll visit other birding hotspots in the area.\n\nThe range is a 106\,000-acre military training facility in Polk and Highlands County. It is also home to several key species of birds that can be tough to find. We’ll be led by Patrick Blake\, the Avon Park ranger and an expert birder.\n\nThe range has a large population of Florida Scrub Jays and Red-cockaded Woodpeckers. We can expect to see Carolina\, House & Marsh Wrens\, and possibly\, a Sedge Wren. We should also expect Palm\, Pine\, Black-and-white\, Yellow-rumped (Myrtle)\, Yellow-throated\, and Prairie Warblers\, as well as Common Yellowthroat. The range has all the standard wading birds (Great Blue Heron\, Great Egret\, Roseate Spoonbill\, etc.)  It is not unheard of to find Painted Buntings\, Hermit Thrush or King Rail with some careful looking. We will also attempt to locate Burrowing Owls and White-tailed Kites.\nAvon Park is near Sebring\, Florida\, which is home to multiple hotels\, grocery stores and restaurants. We ask that you make your own lodging and dining arrangements and pack lunches and beverages for both days.\n\nBe willing to carpool. We will be escorted at Avon Park to ensure no one gets lost or ends up in restricted areas.\n\nThe cost is free\, and registration is required\, and the trip is limited to 10 participants. SUMMARY:Bahia Beach Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Bahia Beach Nature Preserve is a wetland restoration area that enhances the wildlife and marine habitat and improves the water quality discharging into the bay. It is a primitive preserve with no amenities — no water\, restrooms\, etc. The trail is wide but can be uneven in spots. Wear proper shoes and sun protection and have bug spray. \nNearly 70 species were reported during the first week of January\, and 163 species have been recorded there since it became a birding hotspot. Species include: American Wigeon\, American White Pelican\, American Robin\, Swamp Sparrow\, Blue-Winged Teal\, Ring-necked Duck\, Northern Harrier\, Canvas Back\, Redhead\, Sora\, Northern Shoveler and numerous herons and egrets. \nThe trip will be led by Sandy Townsend and Lynn Mitchell. If you’d like to join the potluck\, please bring a dish to share. \nWhalen’s talk will provide the audience with a comprehensive overview of restoration and community engagement in Tampa Bay. He will also answer questions regarding the successes of the estuary program and the challenges it faces.  \nTBEP works to measure and communicate the result of its work to the Tampa Bay community. The recently released 2022 “State of the Bay Progress Report” showcases the program’s progression towards its goals across three priorities: clean waters & sediments\, thriving habitats & abundant wildlife\, and informed\, engaged\, & responsible community.  \nWhalen is a science communication designer and creator with the TBEP. With a background in visual arts\, communications planning\, marketing\, and environmental education\, Joe uses his skills to amplify the science being done by TBEP and its partners\, primarily through digital media platforms like social media and the tbep.org website. Outside of work\, he enjoys underwater photography\, birdwatching\, and playing music in a local rock band.  \nTampa Audubon sponsors monthly meetings and field trips\, and participates in multiple conservation efforts in the Tampa Bay area.
