SUMMARY:Living Waters: Aquatic Preserves of Florida
DESCRIPTION:Living Waters: Aquatic Preserves of Florida\nPhotography Exhibit by Clyde Butcher \nThe Tampa Bay Aquatic Preserves (TBAP) highlight the best of what our state has to offer: open water\, inlet bays\, tidally influenced creeks and rivers\, oyster reefs\, seagrass beds\, salt marshes and mangrove forests. These habitats are vital to Florida’s iconic wildlife such as manatees\, dolphins\, fishes\, oysters\, and an abundance of wading\, nesting and migratory birds. Although not widely known\, TBAP even has a variety of corals in its hard-bottom areas. The preserves include four separate preserves: Boca Ciega Bay Aquatic Preserve\, Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve\, Pinellas County Aquatic Preserve\, and Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve.*\n*Tampa Bay Aquatic Preserves | Florida Department of Environmental Protection \n“Florida’s natural beauty is often most evident in its aquatic preserves. They are Florida’s natural watery Eden’s—home to freshwater springs\, seagrass meadows\, and mangrove forests that provide food and habitat. Florida’s aquatic preserves truly are living waters. Within these pages\, Clyde Butcher celebrates Florida’s aquatic preserves\, capturing magical moments through his breathtaking photographs. His interest and respect for Florida’s natural environment is genuine. Mr. Butcher’s photographs will inspire you and touch your curiosity and concern for the wonders of Florida’s aquatic preserves—our living waters. Water runs through\, around\, and under Florida\, creating its varied landscapes and biological diversity. Mr. Butcher’s photographs remind us that this natural heritage is entrusted to us to maintain for future generations to enjoy and appreciate.”**\n**https://www.clearwaterhistoricalsociety.org/current-exhibits/ \nTampa Audubon will meet at the museum at 10:00 a.m. There is parking behind the museum. There is a donation requested of $5 for each person. After the exhibit\, those interested can go to lunch at a local area restaurant. \nPlease do not attend this or any Tampa Audubon Society events if you have flu\, cold\, or covid symptoms. Tampa Audubon is committed to reducing the spread of illnesses. The health and safety of our members is of the highest priority. \nAdvance registration is required. Please contact the Trip Leader for further coordination. Be sure to plan accordingly: \nRSVP field trip leader Mic McCarty mic.mccarty@tampaaudubon.org

SUMMARY:Birds\, Native Plants & Lunch
DESCRIPTION:We will visit two small gems in Largo (descriptions below)\, have lunch at PJ’s Oyster Bar (outside dining). Wilcox Nursery\, which carries many native plants\, is nearby for anyone shopping to improve their native gardens.\n\nThe morning starts at the John R. Bonner Nature Trail at 8:00 a.m. (14444 143rd St N\, Largo\, FL 33774). From the Florida Birding Trail: John R. Bonner Nature Trail is a “small spot of green in urban Pinellas County\, this city park’s cool\, shady hammock attracts migrating songbirds in spring and fall. Walk the woodland trails (paved and crushed shell) on either side of the park’s entrance road looking for species such as Yellow-billed Cuckoo\, Red-eyed Vireo\, Hooded Warbler\, Louisiana Waterthrush\, Yellow-breasted Chat\, Summer Tanager and Wood Thrush. Wading birds like Great Egret forage at the pond near the parking area. A 460-foot boardwalk leads out to a covered platform set among the mangroves on the Intracoastal Waterway; watch here for gulls\, terns\, shorebirds\, waterfowl and wading birds like Reddish Egret\, Green Heron\, Black-crowned Night-Heron and Roseate Spoonbill. Osprey\, Brown Pelican and Double-crested Cormorant are common all year. Watch for Northern Rough-winged Swallow and Cooper’s Hawk in spring and Gray Kingbird in fall.”\n\n“Also known as the “Turtle Park” for its abundant aquatic turtle population\, the George C McGough Nature Park is a 26-acre park located along the Intracoastal Waterway.  The Nature Center houses live animal exhibits\, including 22 rescued\, non-releasable birds (owls\, hawks & an eagle)\, and offers several environmental education programs. Our nature trails\, including a comfortable rubberized walking trail\, are a great way to see the natural beauty of Florida. Also included are outside shelters and a playground with a kid’s zipline. No dogs\, including service dogs\, are allowed in the park because of the captive birds on the property.”\n\nContact trip leader Mic McCarty at mic.mccarty@tampaaudubon.org to register and receive updates.\n\nImportant! Pre-registration is required\, and participation is limited. Please do not attend this or any Tampa Audubon Society events if you have flu\, cold\, or covid symptoms. SUMMARY:Lakeland Christmas Bird Count
DESCRIPTION:What is a Christmas Bird Count? \nThe longest running Citizen Science survey in the world\, Christmas Bird Counts provide critical data on bird population trends. Tens of thousands of participants know that it also a lot of fun. Families and students\, birders and scientists\, armed with binoculars\, bird guides and checklists go out on an annual mission\, often before dawn\, to count every bird they can find in their territory of the count circle – owls\, rails\, sparrows\, herons\, shorebirds\, warblers\, hawks\, eagle\, blackbirds… every type of bird. Audubon and other organizations use data collected to help guide conservation action. \nHow can I get involved? \nWe need feeder-watchers and field observers. Birders of all ability levels are welcome. Field observers can join a team covering a portion of the count circle by car\, foot and/or boat. Just email Cole Fredericks cfredricks@tampabay.rr.com and we will be in touch to find the best fit for you. Explore the interactive count circle map here. \nChristmas Bird Count | Audubon https://www.audubon.org/conservation/science/christmas-bird-count \nSponsored by the Lake Region Audubon

SUMMARY:Birding at Cypress Point Park
DESCRIPTION:Cypress Point Park is a neighborhood park whose famous winter residents are the Brown Boobies that roost on the offshore signs. It has a beach to study shorebirds at low tide and a grassy park for woodland birds.  A bathroom is available at the parking lot.  Paths and the beach are level; it would be best to wear water shoes for wading if necessary.  Take Cypress Street west all the way to the end\, then turn left and drive south pass the office buildings until you reach the entrance; you’ll have to turn right and drive west to reach the parking lot where we’ll meet.  After the beach birding\, you can walk the park\, or drive to nearby Ben T. Davis Beach to look for more ducks and shorebirds. \nPre-registration is required.  Contact trip leader Lilian Saul at:  lily.saul@tampaaudubon.org to join. \nIf you have not yet been fully vaccinated against COVID-19\, we respectfully request that you do not join us for this outing. Tampa Audubon reserves the right to cancel outings as necessary to respond to COVID-19. We can expect to see Carolina\, House & Marsh Wrens\, and possibly\, a Sedge Wren. The range has all the standard wading birds (Great Blue Heron\, Great Egret\, Roseate Spoonbill\, etc.)  It is not unheard of to find Painted Buntings\, Hermit Thrush or King Rail with some careful looking. We will also attempt to locate Burrowing Owls and White-tailed Kites.\nAvon Park is near Sebring\, Florida\, which is home to multiple hotels\, grocery stores and restaurants. We ask that you make your own lodging and dining arrangements and pack lunches and beverages for both days.\n\nBe willing to carpool. We will be escorted at Avon Park to ensure no one gets lost or ends up in restricted areas.\n\nThe cost is free\, and registration is required\, and the trip is limited to 10 participants.
