SUMMARY:Terra Ceia Preserve State Park
DESCRIPTION:Located just over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Manatee County\, Terra Ceia Preserve State Park is 2\,000 acres of mangrove forests\, freshwater and saltwater wetlands\, and uplands. Much of the preserve is in various stages of habitat restoration that is intended to return agricultural land to its natural and ecologically diverse condition. Bring water\, snacks\, and insect repellent.  A hat is recommended since we will probably be in unshaded areas at least part of the time. \nThere are no restrooms at the park.\n \nContact TAS Field Trip Coordinator Logan Lane logan.lane@tampaaudubon.org for more information. \nImportant! Pre-registration is required\, and participation is limited. Please do not attend this or any Tampa Audubon Society events if you have flu\, cold\, or covid symptoms. Tampa Audubon is committed to reducing the spread of illnesses. The health and safety of our members is of the highest priority.

SUMMARY:Birding Myakka River State Park
DESCRIPTION:Note that this is a mid-week trip! We will meet at 8:00 am at the Myakka River State Park Ranger Station on Wednesday.  Take the first right into the parking area after you pay the entrance fee ($4 for single occupant vehicle\, $6 for up to 8 occupants). We will check the river there\, then drive and walk to various locations in the park where incoming migrants seem to be congregating.\n\nThis park has 37 miles of hiking trails\, but we will only cover a small portion of the park. We will mostly stay within the 7 miles of drivable trail. Walking is easy on the boardwalk but may be harder in other areas of the park.  Additionally\, there is a canopy walk that we can explore if it is open\, but it would be based on the desire of the group.\n\nBring water\, snacks\, insect repellent and lunch if you want to picnic in the park. A hat is recommended since we will probably be in unshaded areas at least part of the time.\n\nContact trip leader Mary Keith at mary.keith@tampaaudubon.org  to register and receive updates.

SUMMARY:Blackwater Creek Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Located north of Plant City\, the Blackwater Creek Nature Preserve (BCNP) is a 2\,200-acre site maintained by Hillsborough County.  BCNP is mostly flat and the trail is a mixture of grass and sand.  While there are several stands of long leaf pines and cypress heads\, the trail is mostly unshaded and generally follows the edges of several wide fields.  We plan on hiking the red trail\, which includes a short walk down to the namesake creek.\nThe total length of our walk is approximately 4.1 miles.  Please wear comfortable shoes and sunscreen if needed.  There are no restrooms at BCNP\, so plan accordingly.\nBirds commonly seen at BCNP during February include Eastern Bluebirds\, Eastern Towhees\, and assorted Warblers.  Less common sightings include Northern Harriers and Bachman’s Sparrows.  Given the large fields and open views\, 10X binoculars will come in handy\, but 8X will be fine.\n\nImportant! Pre-registration is required and participation is limited. Important! Pre-registration is required\, and participation is limited. SUMMARY:Living Waters: Aquatic Preserves of Florida
DESCRIPTION:Living Waters: Aquatic Preserves of Florida\nPhotography Exhibit by Clyde Butcher \nThe Tampa Bay Aquatic Preserves (TBAP) highlight the best of what our state has to offer: open water\, inlet bays\, tidally influenced creeks and rivers\, oyster reefs\, seagrass beds\, salt marshes and mangrove forests. These habitats are vital to Florida’s iconic wildlife such as manatees\, dolphins\, fishes\, oysters\, and an abundance of wading\, nesting and migratory birds. Although not widely known\, TBAP even has a variety of corals in its hard-bottom areas. The preserves include four separate preserves: Boca Ciega Bay Aquatic Preserve\, Cockroach Bay Aquatic Preserve\, Pinellas County Aquatic Preserve\, and Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve.*\n*Tampa Bay Aquatic Preserves | Florida Department of Environmental Protection \n“Florida’s natural beauty is often most evident in its aquatic preserves. They are Florida’s natural watery Eden’s—home to freshwater springs\, seagrass meadows\, and mangrove forests that provide food and habitat. Florida’s aquatic preserves truly are living waters. Within these pages\, Clyde Butcher celebrates Florida’s aquatic preserves\, capturing magical moments through his breathtaking photographs. His interest and respect for Florida’s natural environment is genuine. Mr. Butcher’s photographs will inspire you and touch your curiosity and concern for the wonders of Florida’s aquatic preserves—our living waters. Water runs through\, around\, and under Florida\, creating its varied landscapes and biological diversity. Mr. Butcher’s photographs remind us that this natural heritage is entrusted to us to maintain for future generations to enjoy and appreciate.”**\n**https://www.clearwaterhistoricalsociety.org/current-exhibits/ \nTampa Audubon will meet at the museum at 10:00 a.m. There is parking behind the museum. There is a donation requested of $5 for each person. After the exhibit\, those interested can go to lunch at a local area restaurant. \nPlease do not attend this or any Tampa Audubon Society events if you have flu\, cold\, or covid symptoms. SUMMARY:Birds\, Native Plants & Lunch
DESCRIPTION:We will visit two small gems in Largo (descriptions below)\, have lunch at PJ’s Oyster Bar (outside dining). Wilcox Nursery\, which carries many native plants\, is nearby for anyone shopping to improve their native gardens.\n\nThe morning starts at the John R. Bonner Nature Trail at 8:00 a.m. (14444 143rd St N\, Largo\, FL 33774). From the Florida Birding Trail: John R. Bonner Nature Trail is a “small spot of green in urban Pinellas County\, this city park’s cool\, shady hammock attracts migrating songbirds in spring and fall. Walk the woodland trails (paved and crushed shell) on either side of the park’s entrance road looking for species such as Yellow-billed Cuckoo\, Red-eyed Vireo\, Hooded Warbler\, Louisiana Waterthrush\, Yellow-breasted Chat\, Summer Tanager and Wood Thrush. Wading birds like Great Egret forage at the pond near the parking area. A 460-foot boardwalk leads out to a covered platform set among the mangroves on the Intracoastal Waterway; watch here for gulls\, terns\, shorebirds\, waterfowl and wading birds like Reddish Egret\, Green Heron\, Black-crowned Night-Heron and Roseate Spoonbill. Osprey\, Brown Pelican and Double-crested Cormorant are common all year. Watch for Northern Rough-winged Swallow and Cooper’s Hawk in spring and Gray Kingbird in fall.”\n\n“Also known as the “Turtle Park” for its abundant aquatic turtle population\, the George C McGough Nature Park is a 26-acre park located along the Intracoastal Waterway.  The Nature Center houses live animal exhibits\, including 22 rescued\, non-releasable birds (owls\, hawks & an eagle)\, and offers several environmental education programs. Our nature trails\, including a comfortable rubberized walking trail\, are a great way to see the natural beauty of Florida. Also included are outside shelters and a playground with a kid’s zipline. No dogs\, including service dogs\, are allowed in the park because of the captive birds on the property.”\n\nContact trip leader Mic McCarty at mic.mccarty@tampaaudubon.org to register and receive updates.\n\nImportant! Sierra Club’s Todd Randolph is organizing the event 815/347-2421. Questions? Call Ann Paul 813/624-3149.\n\nDirections to Site:  From 1-275\, take Westshore Blvd. exit and head south on Westshore.  Turn right at W. San Jose Street.  Follow San Jose until you reach an S-shaped curve.  The Sanctuary is located on the right.  Park on the street being considerate not to block mailboxes or drive ways.
