DESCRIPTION:The Nature Coast Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society meets the second Tuesday of every month at 7:00 PM at The Land O’ Lakes Heritage Park Community Center\, 5401 Land O’ Lakes Blvd/US 41\, Land O’ Lakes\, 34639\, between SR 52 and SR 54.  \nThe subject of the October 11\, 2022 meeting is “A History of Hillsborough River State Park and It’s Future Challenges”\, presented by Cheryl Metzger. Cheryl has been the Resource Management Park Services Specialist for Hillsborough River State Park for the past 5 years. She is the Burn Manager for the Park and oversees a team that treats non-native\, invasive plant species in the 1\,600 acre Park. Cheryl manages multiple restoration projects and provides training for staff and volunteers to manage the natural resources of the Park. \nThe Park has been historically significant since the beginning of the Second Seminole War which began in 1835\, before becoming officially a part of the Florida State Park System in 1935 and the Civilian Conservation Corps involvement in its construction. With these cultural changes\, the natural areas have changed too\, some for the better. As the next 100 years approaches\, what challenges will be faced in 2035 and beyond?  \nMeetings of the Chapter are free\, and all interested parties are invited to attend and bring questions about their yard. SUMMARY:Invasive Exotic Plants on Nature Lands
DESCRIPTION:The Nature Coast Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society meets the second Tuesday of every month at 7:00 PM at The Land O’ Lakes Heritage Park Community Center\, 5401 Land O’ Lakes Blvd/US 41\, Land O’ Lakes\, 34639\, between SR 52 and SR 54. The subject of the February 8\, 2022 meeting is “Invasive Exotic Plants on Nature Lands” presented by Michael Terry. This presentation will focus on the invasive plant species on the Southwest Florida Water Management District’s (SWFWMD) Upper Hillsborough Tract – 6\,978 acres that protects the upper reaches of the Hillsborough River. This river’s floodplain provides natural storage of floodwaters\, acts as a filtration system for runoff and serves as an important link in protecting wildlife habitat in the Hillsborough River greenway corridor. Mike will identify some of the invasive plant species on the property\, describe the damage they cause\, and explain what is being done to remove these invasives from this property. \nMichael is the Senior Vegetation Management Specialist in the Operations and Land Management Bureau with SWFWMD. He has been with the District for 37 years\, working with terrestrial and aquatic exotic vegetation. His duties include working with private contractors on SWFWMD lands to oversee their exotic treatment and helicopter surveys for Old World Climbing Fern. He also works control burns and wildfires as needed. \nMeetings of the Chapter are free\, and all interested parties are invited to attend and bring questions about their yard. DESCRIPTION:The Nature Coast Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society meets the\nsecond Tuesday of every month at 7:00 PM at The Land O’ Lakes Community Center\, 5401 Land O’ Lakes Blvd/US 41\, Land O’ Lakes\, 34639\, between SR 52 and SR 54. \nThe subject of the Tuesday\, September 10\, 2019\, meeting is The Ruby-Throated Hummingbird”\, presented by Christine Rowland. Christine is the President of West Pasco Audubon\, our local chapter of the National Audubon Society. \nChristine inherited her interest in birds from her father who\, at 91\, just\nbought another pair of bird watching binoculars. She started attending the\nWest Audubon Society meetings after she and her husband moved to Florida from New York City where she was a high school teacher. Christine has been president of the West Pasco Audubon Society since January of this year. \nLearn more about this most common local hummingbird\, its life\, habits and\nmigration. Want to attract them to your garden? We’ll cover their favorite\nnative plants as well as best practices for hummingbird feeders. Want to\nhelp researchers learn more about these hummingbirds? Discover ways you can help with their study and conservation. Christine will also provide an\nintroduction to the Audubon Plants for Birds Program. \nMeetings of the Chapter are free\, and all interested parties are invited to\nattend\, to bring questions about their yard\, and participate in light\nrefreshments and the native plant drawing.
