SUMMARY:Friends Trail Extended Hike
DESCRIPTION:This 2 mile loop hike will take place on the Friends Trail\, at the end of Lora Lane. This hike cannot be accessed at the main campus. \n\n\nEnjoy the Preserve on a trail less travelled–The Friends Trail\, located at the end of Lora Lane off Keystone. This Extended Hike is for the more serious hiker: a 2 mile hike\, on an unimproved footpath\, exploring a variety of habitats. The guides and hikers will drive themselves to the location; do not come to the main Preserve campus. Join us for this opportunity to hike with Jo on one of our lesser known trails in the beautiful weather! \nRead this important Hike Information: \nHikers should arrive at the trailhead at the dead end of Lora Lane\, 10 minutes before the scheduled start time. Lora Lane is 1/2 mile west of Brooker Entrance on Keystone. You travel one mile on Lora Lane until the road ends\, and park. \nYou may use a mapping app: Lora Lane\, Tarpon Springs \n\nFriends Trail Loop is approximately 2 miles in length\, on unimproved\, uneven sandy trails\, with exposed roots.\nThere are no restroom facilities on site. \nHike takes about two (2) hours to complete.\nPlease wear sturdy\, closed-toe shoes\, sneakers or boots.\nInsect repellent (bug spray) is strongly recommended in summer months.\nBring plenty of drinking water and a snack.\nA hat\, sunglasses\, sunscreen and a walking stick are also recommended.\nPets are not permitted.\nNo smoking is allowed.\nTrained volunteers will guide the hike.\nAn Equal Opportunity Institution\n\n\n.This is a free hike\, however space is limited. SUMMARY:Return the Preserve Work Day
DESCRIPTION:The Preserve Work Days are hosted by the Friends of Brooker Creek Preserve! \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Return The Preserve Work Days focus on areas of the preserve where exotic invasive vegetation and unnatural overgrowth exists.  It is our goal to help return the preserve to its natural beauty. \nWorking with FOBCP leadership and Preserve staff\, volunteers provide the much needed hands-on support necessary to remove nuisance plants providing a more healthy environment for native wildlife. \nRegistration is required. This event is capped at 25 volunteers. In addition\, the Volunteer Form must be completed and brought with you the day of the event. \n>>> REGISTER HERE <<< \nThis Work Day will be focusing on the Friends Trail located at the end of Lora Lane. Lora Lane is located a 1/2 mile west of the main Brooker Entrance off of Keystone. You travel one mile on Lora Lane until the road ends\, and park. Registered participants will meet at 7:45\, start at 8:00\, and work until 11:00. \nImportant notes: There are no facilities or restrooms at this site. \nPlease bring clippers\, loppers\, hand saws\, gloves\, hat\, and sunscreen. DESCRIPTION:Have you wondered what bird is singing in your backyard?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDo you see and hear birds but don’t know who they are? If so\, join us for a Beginning Bird Hike to learn how to identify the county’s common birds as we meander along a one-mile trail. Registration is required. \nThis is a free hike\, however space is limited. Please be courteous and do not register unless you plan to attend and cancel your reservation if you can no longer attend. \nGuided Hike Information \nVolunteer Hike Guides will meet participants outside the Exhibit Hall 10 minutes before the scheduled start time. DESCRIPTION:Do you know why frogs are so important to our world\, and how by saving them\, we save the environment?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExplore challenges frogs are facing\, as well as some ways that ordinary people of all ages can help.  Learn about our very own Florida frogs\, and maybe even croak in a human frog chorus!  Program suitable for all ages. \nJoin Avalon Theisen\, the young founder of Conserve It Forward\, Inc. for Florida Frogs! \nAbout Avalon: \nA passionate changemaker with over a decade of service to people and planet\, Avalon Jade Theisen is dedicated to empowering others to Conserve It Forward for a sustainable future and inspiring the next generation of peacemakers. At age 7\, she first realized she could make positive\, effective change. Her efforts resulted in the creation of a non-profit organization. Encouraging the use of kindness and compassion to confront global issues\, she has traveled the world to share her message and work alongside others. \nA graduate of the University of South Florida\, Avalon Jade was a member of the Judy Genshaft Honors College and Provost Scholars Program\, where she studied Religious Studies\, especially its cultural relationship to nature and food. These topics have been the focus of her academic research\, including multiple presentations and being published. \nCurrently a Ph.D. student at Arizona State University\, her research continues to focus on religious studies\, ecology\, anthropology\, and volunteering efforts. With a goal of helping other people understand new concepts that can improve quality of life and planet health\, a common theme she uses is “Small Acts\, BIG Change” to demonstrate how our collective\, positive actions add up to have great impact. No one is alone\, we are all in this together! \nShe believes that when we better understand each other’s foundational beliefs\, we improve our connections and can more effectively collaborate to solve local and global challenges. Her academic experience reflects the journey of service and academics she has been on since childhood. \nTeaching elementary\, middle\, and high school students about cultural empathy\, peacemaking\, sustainability and world religions through curriculum she created\, Avalon Jade has been a educator at Athena’s Advanced Academy since 2017. She loves helping her students understand others and the world we live in. \nTo maintain balance and focus\, Avalon practices mindfulness\, meditation\, and yoga. DESCRIPTION:A nature-based fundraising hike series! \nDescription: This series of four hikes will take place in beautiful areas tucked away within Brooker Creek Preserve in sites that are closed to the public. Our guide\, Dr. Craig Huegel\, a Wildlife Ecologist with St. Petersburg College\, can identify everything\, from the tiniest moss to the tallest tree including animal prints\, bird calls\, lichens\, and more. He is full of stories and very patient in answering questions. The hikes will be not only educational\, but a lot of fun as well! The hikes will begin at 9:00 a.m. and be about 3-4 hours long. Bring\nwater and lunch. \nCost: $80 donation for the series or $25 donation per hike. There is a 10% discount for members of Friends of Brooker Creek Preserve.  \nSites Off the Beaten Path: \nJan. 13\, 2019 – Cypress Swamp Stomp – Located in the central part of the preserve\, this site features orchids\, ferns\, and epiphytes. Plan to get wet\, or maybe not\, as we plunge into the depths of the swamp! \nMarch 24\, 2019 – Sandhill Scramble – The only true sandhills of Brooker Creek Preserve. Our guide\, Dr. Craig Huegel\, a Wildlife Ecologist with St. Petersburg College\, can identify everything\, from the tiniest moss to the tallest tree including animal prints\, bird calls\, lichens\, and more. He is full of stories and very patient in answering questions. The hikes will be not only educational\, but a lot of fun as well! The hikes will begin at 9:00 a.m. and be about 3-4 hours long. Bring\nwater and lunch. \nCost: $80 donation for the series or $25 donation per hike. There is a 10% discount for members of Friends of Brooker Creek Preserve.  \nSites Off the Beaten Path: \nJan. 13\, 2019 – Cypress Swamp Stomp – Located in the central part of the preserve\, this site features orchids\, ferns\, and epiphytes. Plan to get wet\, or maybe not\, as we plunge into the depths of the swamp! \nMarch 24\, 2019 – Sandhill Scramble – The only true sandhills of Brooker Creek Preserve. This site is in the northern end of the preserve and will feature an abundance of spring wildflowers. \nJune 23\, 2019 – Interior Wildlands  – We will be in parts of the Preserve so remote that cell phones won’t work\, areas so pretty you won’t believe you are in Pinellas County! \nSept. 22\, 2019 – In Search of the Catesby’s Lily – Located in the eastern part of the preserve\, we will search for the threatened Catesby’s Lily. In so doing\, we will see a profusion of beautiful fall wildflowers in full bloom. \nReservations Required: Sign up early!
