DESCRIPTION:Where Did the Snakes Go?\nThe Parasite Behind Pygmy Rattlesnake Declines \nLearn about new research from the University of Central Florida’s Biology Department! \nPrecipitous declines of Sistrurus miliarius are spatially and temporally consistent with the initial invasion of the lung parasite\, Raillietiella orientalis (RO). RO is suspected to have been introduced by the established Burmese pythons in South Florida and causes disease in snakes native to the southeastern United States. Eighteen species of native snakes are documented as definitive hosts in Florida but pathology and risk of disease development between species is understudied. During this program\, Jenna will introduce the invasive lung parasite\, uncover what species are at risk of infections in the southeastern US\, and why pygmy rattlesnakes are an exceptionally vulnerable host. \n>>> REGISTER HERE <<< \nAdditional Notes: It takes about 10 minutes to drive from the preserve entrance (Keystone Rd.) to the parking lot\, and there is a 2-5 minute walk from the parking lot to the Education Center buildings. This program meets in the Auditorium \nThis program is sponsored by the Friends of Brooker Creek Preserve. \nSpeaker Bio: Jenna is a second-year PhD student at the University of Central Florida in Dr. Anna Savage’s lab. Though the focal species of her dissertation is Sistrurus miliarius\, she works to assess all species of snakes in North America that are at risk of infection by Raillietiella orientalis as the disease caused by the pathogen (pentastomiasis) can be severe and often lethal. She is the founder of a collaborative network called SLAM (Snake Lungworm Alliance and Monitoring) that consists of many researchers and managers across the southeastern United States. Jenna is also the co-chair of the national Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC) Disease Task Team which facilitates and guides communication and collaboration on herpetofaunal diseases among PARC regions\, federal and state agencies\, and partners.

DESCRIPTION:The Preserve Work Days are hosted by the Friends of Brooker Creek Preserve! \n\n\n\nThe Return The Preserve Work Days focus on areas of the preserve where exotic invasive vegetation and unnatural overgrowth exists.  It is our goal to help return the preserve to its natural beauty. \nWorking with FOBCP leadership and Preserve staff\, volunteers provide the much needed hands-on support necessary to remove nuisance plants providing a more healthy environment for native wildlife. \nRegistration is required. This event is capped at 25 volunteers. In addition\, the Volunteer Form must be completed and brought with you the day of the event. \nWe will meet in the main parking lot. SUMMARY:Why Snakes are Cool
DESCRIPTION:Learn why snakes are cool and the important ecological roles they play! \nThere are 46 native species of snakes in Florida and most occur in the central peninsula.  Despite playing important ecological roles as both predators and prey\, snakes remain highly misunderstood vertebrates.  Only four venomous species occur in central Florida and these snakes present little danger when left alone.  Local herpetologist and environmental educator George L. Heinrich (Heinrich Ecological Services) will present on why snakes are cool\, emphasizing Florida snake diversity\, natural history\, conservation\, and snake safety.  A selection of LIVE snakes will be available for viewing and handling if participants choose to do so (we hope that you will). *This program is recommended for adults and children 7+ \nAdditional Notes: It takes about 10 minutes to drive from the preserve entrance (Keystone Rd.) to the parking lot\, and there is a 2-5 minute walk from the parking lot to the Education Center buildings. DESCRIPTION:This program is a journey through time representing man’s long term relationship with peregrine falcons. The importance of coastal areas\, climate\, water\, bird friendly communities and migratory stop overs is discussed. Peregrine falcons are extreme predators that ended up on the endangered species list. Several organizations\, as well as falconers\, were instrumental in bringing the peregrine falcons back to their nesting grounds and into the 21st century. Peregrines have adapted well in urban environments and counts at Hawk Watches have been very high. The program features live falcons! The guides and hikers will drive themselves to the location; do not come to the main Preserve campus. Join us for this opportunity to hike with Alexa on one of our lesser known trails to bird watch! \nRead this important Hike Information: \nHikers should arrive at the trailhead at the dead end of Lora Lane\, 10 minutes before the scheduled start time. Lora Lane is 1/2 mile west of Brooker Entrance on Keystone. You travel one mile on Lora Lane until the road ends\, and park. \nYou may use a mapping app: Lora Lane\, Tarpon Springs \n\nThis is a bird watching walk\, you will not be hiking the entire trail.\nThere are no restroom facilities on site. \nHike takes about two (2) hours to complete.\nPlease wear sturdy\, closed-toe shoes\, sneakers or boots.\nInsect repellent (bug spray) is strongly recommended in summer months.\nBring plenty of drinking water and a snack.\nA hat\, sunglasses\, sunscreen and a walking stick are also recommended.\nPets are not permitted.\nNo smoking is allowed.\nTrained volunteers will guide the hike.\nAn Equal Opportunity Institution\n\n\n.This is a free hike\, however space is limited. At age 7\, she first realized she could make positive\, effective change. Her efforts resulted in the creation of a non-profit organization. Encouraging the use of kindness and compassion to confront global issues\, she has traveled the world to share her message and work alongside others. \nA graduate of the University of South Florida\, Avalon Jade was a member of the Judy Genshaft Honors College and Provost Scholars Program\, where she studied Religious Studies\, especially its cultural relationship to nature and food. These topics have been the focus of her academic research\, including multiple presentations and being published. \nCurrently a Ph.D. student at Arizona State University\, her research continues to focus on religious studies\, ecology\, anthropology\, and volunteering efforts. With a goal of helping other people understand new concepts that can improve quality of life and planet health\, a common theme she uses is “Small Acts\, BIG Change” to demonstrate how our collective\, positive actions add up to have great impact. No one is alone\, we are all in this together! \nShe believes that when we better understand each other’s foundational beliefs\, we improve our connections and can more effectively collaborate to solve local and global challenges. Her academic experience reflects the journey of service and academics she has been on since childhood. \nTeaching elementary\, middle\, and high school students about cultural empathy\, peacemaking\, sustainability and world religions through curriculum she created\, Avalon Jade has been a educator at Athena’s Advanced Academy since 2017. She loves helping her students understand others and the world we live in. \nTo maintain balance and focus\, Avalon practices mindfulness\, meditation\, and yoga. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture\, these under-appreciated workers pollinate 80 percent of our flowering crops\, which constitute one-third of everything we eat. Honey bees are important for pollinating familiar crops such as oranges\, grapefruit\, apples\, almonds\, blueberries\, pumpkins\, asparagus\, and cucumbers\, and also contribute to our beef and dairy industries by pollinating alfalfa.
