SUMMARY:Archaeology Works: Heritage Monitoring Scouts
DESCRIPTION:Heritage Monitoring Scouts (HMS Florida) is a public engagement program focused on tracking changes to archaeological sites at risk\, particularly those impacted by climate change in the form of erosion and sea level rise. Join archaeologists from the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) for this information session to learn how to become a heritage monitoring scout. FPAN will discuss threats to archaeological sites\, how to identify some common site types and artifacts\, and the best way to record and monitor them. \nFollowing this introductory session\, FPAN will do a short hike in the Weedon Island Preserve to do a hands-on training of how HMS tracks data on archaeological sites. For more information on this program go to www.fpan.us/HMSflorida \nQuestions or concerns? Please contact Weedon Island Preserve ta 727-453-6500 or weedonisland@pinellascounty.org. \nRegistration: https://www.eventbrite.com/o/weedon-island-preserve-cultural-and-natural-history-center-1250121017

SUMMARY:Identification of Florida Turtles
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever watched turtles basking on a log or nesting along a trail and wondered which species you were observing? Turtles are visible elements in many ecosystems and\, for the most part\, can be easily identified. Florida’s wide variety of habitats support 28 of the 62 (45.2%) species known to occur in the United States\, the most turtle-rich country. Significant habitat diversity and species richness make Florida a chelonian hotspot and critical to the conservation of many species. Attendees will learn basic identification techniques that will enhance their ventures into the field. \nRecommended for adults and youth ages 8 and up. \nRegistration: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/identification-of-florida-turtles-tickets-86133025197?mc_cid=a4dbfdde6b&mc_eid=1cbba2e07b \n

SUMMARY:Gandy Causeway Clean-Up Blitz
DESCRIPTION:Audubon’s Florida Coastal Islands Sanctuaries is scheduling a Clean-Up Blitz on Saturday\, February 8\, from 10 a.m. to noon. The entire community is welcome to join this effort to improve water quality while enhancing the aesthetic quality of Tampa Bay\, one of Florida’s most spectacularly beautiful and biologically valuable water bodies.  It is the largest open-water estuary in the state and is fed by four major river systems. \nCommunity partners engaged in the effort include Ferrovial Services\, the FDOT contractor that is providing bags and removing the picked-up trash; Keep Pinellas County Beautiful\, which is providing picker-upper tools; and Tampa Bay Watch\, which is helping with volunteer coordination. \nVolunteers should wear walk-in-the-water-and-mud shoes (not flip flops)\, long sleeves and pants\, a hat\, and sunscreen.  Bring gloves and your own picker-upper tool\, if possible\, and something to drink. We will only be working for about two hours but hope to make a real change\, removing debris left by visitors to the site as well as what the tide washes in. \nWhat: Gandy Causeway Clean-up Blitz\nWhere: the Gandy Causeway on the Pinellas side\, on the south of the roadway\, at the east end of the mangroves\nWhen: Saturday\, Feb. 8\, 10 a.m. – noon \nFor more information: Ann Paul\, Audubon Florida’s Coastal Islands Sanctuaries Regional Coordinator\, 813.623.6826 – office\, or 813.624.3149 – cell.
