DESCRIPTION:Learn about the lifestyles of the native bees in your own Pinellas County backyard. \nFind out about Pinellas County’s surprising and diverse native bees! Learn about their lifestyles (hint\, no hives)\, how to identify them and what you can do to help them. \nThis program will take place inside the auditorium of the Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center\, but may also go outside briefly to look for bees. This program is recommended for adults and youth ages 8 and up. \nThis program will be led by Liz Childress\, supervisor of the Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center. Liz is a life-long student of Florida’s natural environment\, with special interests in insects\, fish\, and birds. A second-generation Pinellas native\, Liz changed careers from technology to environmental education. She graduated from University of Florida and Georgia Institute of Technology with degrees in journalism and business\, and has completed coursework in entomology. SUMMARY:Youth Workshop: Ancient Pottery
DESCRIPTION:Learn to make pottery like the ancient people who once lived at Weedon Island. Over 1\,000 years ago\, early potters were making coiled pots out of clay and sand for cooking vessels and ceremonial functions. This workshop will teach youth how to form a small-coiled pot and add distinctive decorations using early techniques. \nThis workshop is recommended for youth ages 6 and up. All youth must be accompanied by an adult for the full duration of the class. The workshop is limited to 30 participants total. \nThis workshop will be led by Phyllis Kolianos\, an archaeologist with the Alliance for Weedon Island Archaeological Research and Education\, Inc. (AWIARE). Kolianos was an employee of Pinellas County and the past manager of the Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center for over a decade. \n>>> REGISTER HERE <<<

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Halloween at the preserve! \nTrunk or treat is a safe alternative to traditional trick-or-treating. Families meet in the parking lot at the nature center at 6 p.m.\, decorate their cars with fun\, nature-themed decorations. Beginning at 6:30 p.m.\, the kids walk from car to car collecting goodies along the way just as they would during a traditional trick or treat outing. Boyd Hill Nature Preserve staff will also provide various treats including plant seedlings and nature-themed stickers\, etc. We will have prizes for the best decorated car\, best costume\, and more! Please remember to bring your own bag for collecting treats.
