DESCRIPTION:Davis Park is an underappreciated hotspot in Brandon just north of Highway 60 off of Parsons. The park has one named lake\, Mead Lake\, and two unnamed lakes. All three lakes are home to breeding Wood Ducks\, Sandhill Cranes and other waterfowl. Black-bellied Ducks\, Wood Ducks\, Black-crown Night Herons\, cranes and other bird species roost for the night in the park. Bring your camera or phone or just come along to stroll\, learn and enjoy! \nPlease RSVP to jallyn727@gmail.com with your name\, number in your party\, and a cell phone number where you can be reached in case of event cancellation. \nThe 596-acre park protects valuable coastal habitat and ecological communities that include mangrove forests\, salt marshes\, freshwater marshes\, coastal hammocks\, and pine flatwoods. Visitors can take a hike on nature trails and boardwalks and see gopher tortoises\, zebra swallowtail butterflies\, and even bobcats. They can also check out the shallow fresh water ponds that provide habitat for aquatic plants and animals. Live oaks and other hardwood trees often grow near these wetlands\, where red-shouldered hawks and bald eagles are sometimes seen. DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand…\nOFF THE BEATEN PATH\nA nature-based fundraising hike series \nThis series of four hikes will take place in beautiful areas tucked away within Brooker Creek Preserve in sites that are closed to the public. Our guide\, Dr. Craig Huegel\, can identify everything\, from the tiniest moss to the tallest tree including animal prints\, bird calls\, lichens\, and more. He is full of stories and very patient in answering questions. The hikes will be not only educational\, but a lot of fun as well! \nThe hikes will begin at 9:00 a.m. and be about 3-4 hours long. In so doing\, we will see a profusion of beautiful fall wildflowers in full bloom. \nJan. 19\, 2025 – Cypress Swamp – Located in the central part of the preserve\, this site\nfeatures orchids\, ferns\, and epiphytes. Plan to get wet\, or maybe not\, as we plunge into the depths of the swamp! \nMarch 16\, 2025 – Sandhills – The only true sandhills of Brooker Creek Preserve.
