DESCRIPTION:Meet the wading birds of the Weedon Island Preserve on a guided walk of the trails. \n\n\nLearn the identifying marks and behaviors of the most common wading birds at Weedon Island Preserve during a guided walk of the trails. This walk will take place during a low tide so participants will have the best chance for viewing wildlife that forage on the exposed tidal flats! \nThis tour is for adults and youth ages 10 and up. Youth must be supervised by an adult for the full duration of the program. \nAttendees will meet inside the Cultural and Natural History Center for a short introduction before departing for the trails. The total hike length may be up to two miles. This hike may traverse uneven\, natural paths or boardwalks so please prepare accordingly. SUMMARY:Birding at Cypress Point Park
DESCRIPTION:Cypress Point Park is a neighborhood park whose famous winter residents are the Brown Boobies that roost on the offshore signs. It has a beach to study shorebirds at low tide and a grassy park for woodland birds.  A bathroom is available at the parking lot.  Paths and the beach are level; it would be best to wear water shoes for wading if necessary.  Take Cypress Street west all the way to the end\, then turn left and drive south pass the office buildings until you reach the entrance; you’ll have to turn right and drive west to reach the parking lot where we’ll meet.  After the beach birding\, you can walk the park\, or drive to nearby Ben T. Davis Beach to look for more ducks and shorebirds. \nPre-registration is required.  Contact trip leader Lilian Saul at:  lily.saul@tampaaudubon.org to join. \nIf you have not yet been fully vaccinated against COVID-19\, we respectfully request that you do not join us for this outing. SUMMARY:FAM Archaeology Kayak Experience
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an archaeology-focused paddle trip to an excavation site at the Weedon Island Preserve. \n\n\n\nJoin archaeologists and environmental specialists for a unique archaeology-focused paddling event. This is a one-of-a-kind event\, featuring local experts who will guide your experience of the natural and cultural history of Weedon Island.  \nThe trip begins with a paddle from Weedon Island’s fishing pier to Ross Island\, a nearby island within the Preserve’s boundary. On Ross Island\, participants will explore an archaeological site with Kendal Jackson\, a PhD candidate with the University of South Florida who works on Ross Island as part of his doctorate research. \nThis trip will be led by Rachael Kangas\, Director of the West Central division of The Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN)\, and Dr. Bob Austin with the Alliance for Weedon Island Archaeological Research and Education\, Inc. (AWIARE). They will make stops along the way to discuss archaeological and historical aspects of the area. In addition\, environmental specialists from ECOmersion will be on the water to interpret the Preserve’s natural areas and enhance participants’ understanding of estuaries. \n\nParticipants must be 18 years of age or older. Kayaks will be provided by ECOmersion. Those who prefer to use their own kayaks are welcome to do so\, however\, neither Sun Dolphin nor Pelican brand kayaks will be allowed.\nAttendees will meet at 7:30 a.m. at the fishing pier/kayak launch located inside the Weedon Island Preserve. SUMMARY:FAM Walking History Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided walking tour of the Weedon Island Preserve to learn about its aviation history. \n\n\n\nSt. Petersburg has a long and rich history of aviation\, including the well-known first commercial flight in 1914. But in addition to this accomplishment\, the Grand Central Airport that functioned on Weedon Island during the early 20th century also led to momentous firsts for flight in St. Pete. Join archaeologists with the Florida Public Archaeology Network for a guided tour of the Preserve to learn about the Island’s history with flight and visit historic sites. \nThis tour is for adults and youth ages 10 and up. Youth must be supervised by an adult for the full duration of the program. \nAttendees will meet inside the Cultural and Natural History Center for a short introduction before departing for the trails. The total hike length may be up to ~2 miles. This hike will traverse uneven\, natural paths or boardwalks so participants must be able to manage these conditions. Afterwards\, attendees will return to the Center to complete an evaluation of the hike and explore the museum’s exhibits. \nProceeds from this program go to support FPAN in their archaeological mission. \n>>> REGISTER HERE <<<

SUMMARY:Saturday Guided Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided tour of the trails and boardwalks of the Weedon Island Preserve. \n\n\nExplore the mangrove and upland ecosystems of Weedon Island on this guided hike of the Preserve. Learn about the coastal environment\, native wildlife\, and early history of the island. This tour is for adults and youth ages 10 and up. Youth must be supervised by an adult for the full duration of the program. \nAttendees will meet inside the Cultural and Natural History Center for a short introduction before departing for the trails. The total hike length may be up to two miles. This hike may traverse uneven\, natural paths or boardwalks so please prepare accordingly. Afterwards\, attendees will return to the Center to complete an evaluation of the hike and explore the museum’s exhibits. \n>>> REGISTER HERE <<< \nProceeds from this program go to the Friends of Weedon Island. SUMMARY:Sunday Bird Hike
DESCRIPTION:Come out for this “early morning” walk in the woods with Alexa to seek out the resident and visiting birds of Brooker. Beginners and all levels of birders welcome. Meet in the parking lot at 8:00 a.m. \nThis is a free hike\, however space is limited. Please be courteous and do not register unless you plan to attend and cancel your reservation if you can no longer attend. \n>>> REGISTER HERE <<<\n \nGuided Hike Information \nVolunteer Hike Guides will meet participants in the parking lot 10 minutes before the scheduled start time. We strongly suggest all hikers visit the restroom (located in the Classroom Building) before we begin as there are no facilities along the trail. \n\nGuided hikes are under a mile in length\, much of which is on unimproved\, uneven sandy trails.\n\n\nHikes take about two (2) hours to complete.\n\n\nPlease wear sturdy\, closed-toe shoes\, sneakers or boots.\n\n\nInsect repellent (bug spray) is strongly recommended in summer months.\n\n\nBring plenty of drinking water and a snack.\n\n\nA hat\, sunglasses\, and sunscreen are also recommended.\n\n\nPets are not permitted.\n\n\nNo smoking is allowed.\n\n\nTrained volunteers will guide the hike.
