DESCRIPTION:Come out for this “early morning” walk in the woods. \nCome out for this “early morning” walk in the woods with Alexa\, our awesome volunteer\, to seek out the resident and visiting birds of Brooker. Beginners and all levels of birders welcome. Meet in the parking lot at 8:00 a.m. \nThis is a free hike\, however space is limited. Please be courteous and do not register unless you plan to attend and cancel your reservation if you can no longer attend. \n>>> RESERVE A SPOT <<< \nGuided Hike Information \nVolunteer Hike Guides will meet participants in the parking lot 10 minutes before the scheduled start time. We strongly suggest all hikers visit the restroom (located in the Classroom Building) before we begin as there are no facilities along the trail. \n\nGuided hikes are under a mile in length\, much of which is on unimproved\, uneven sandy trails.\n\n\nHikes take about two (2) hours to complete.\n\n\nPlease wear sturdy\, closed-toe shoes\, sneakers or boots.\n\n\nInsect repellent (bug spray) is strongly recommended in summer months.\n\n\nBring plenty of drinking water and a snack.\n\n\nA hat\, sunglasses\, and sunscreen are also recommended.\n\n\nPets are not permitted.\n\n\nNo smoking is allowed.\n\n\nTrained volunteers will guide the hike.\n\nAdditional Notes: It takes about 10 minutes to drive from the preserve entrance (Keystone Rd.) to the parking lot.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided tour of the trails and boardwalks of the Weedon Island Preserve. \n\n\nExplore the mangrove and upland ecosystems of Weedon Island on this guided hike of the Preserve. Learn about the coastal environment\, native wildlife\, and early history of the island. This tour is for adults and youth ages 10 and up. Youth must be supervised by an adult for the full duration of the program. \nAttendees will meet inside the Cultural and Natural History Center for a short introduction before departing for the trails. The total hike length may be up to two miles. This hike may traverse uneven\, natural paths or boardwalks so please prepare accordingly. Afterwards\, attendees will return to the Center to complete an evaluation of the hike and explore the museum’s exhibits. \nProceeds from this program go to the Friends of Weedon Island. SUMMARY:Diamondback Terrapins: Conservation of an Imperiled Coastal Turtle
DESCRIPTION:Herpetologist George Heinrich will discuss Diamondback Terrapins in Florida. \nLearn about the natural history and conservation of an imperiled estuarine turtle\, the diamondback terrapin. Although terrapins occur in 16 states along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts\, the coastline of Florida represents approximately 20% of their entire range. Five of the seven recognized subspecies occur in the state’s extensive salt marsh and mangrove habitats\, including three endemics. \nThis program will take place inside the auditorium of the Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center. This program is recommended for adults and youth ages 10+. Youth should be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the program. \nThis program will feature George L. Heinrich\, a field biologist and environmental educator specializing in Florida reptiles. His company\, Heinrich Ecological Services is based in St. Petersburg\, Florida\, and conducts wildlife surveys and research\, natural history programming\, and nature-based tours. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided tour of the trails and boardwalks of the Weedon Island Preserve. \n\n\nExplore the mangrove and upland ecosystems of Weedon Island on this guided hike of the Preserve. Learn about the coastal environment\, native wildlife\, and early history of the island. This tour is for adults and youth ages 10 and up. Youth must be supervised by an adult for the full duration of the program. \nAttendees will meet inside the Cultural and Natural History Center for a short introduction before departing for the trails. The total hike length may be up to two miles. This hike may traverse uneven\, natural paths or boardwalks so please prepare accordingly. Afterwards\, attendees will return to the Center to complete an evaluation of the hike and explore the museum’s exhibits. \nProceeds from this program go to the Friends of Weedon Island. SUMMARY:Advanced Plant Identification - 3-Part Series
DESCRIPTION:This three-part plant identification series will introduce participants to the steps required to positively identify plants. \n  \n\n\nPlant identification is based on close observation of morphological characteristics\, contextual clues and lots of practice. This three-part advanced plant identification series will introduce participants to these concepts and the associated vocabulary of the plant scientist. \nThe class follows the contents of Harrington’s “How to Identify Plants” (1957); a copy of which is provided to each registrant. This concise text contains a comprehensive vocabulary of terms and illustrations to help clarify concepts. \nA packet of supplemental educational materials will also be provided to each registrant. \nRegistration will CLOSE on October 6.  \n>>> REGISTER HERE <<< \nAbout this Event  \nDuring each 4-hour classroom event\, participants will engage in a participatory lecture\, and have plenty of time for Q & A.
