DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate our 13th annual offering of Exploring Environmental Education Curriculum Options (ECO) Educator Workshop! \nExploring Environmental Education Curriculum Options (ECO) Teacher Training Workshop \nThe University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension Pinellas County’s Natural Resources Agent has teamed up with St. Petersburg College\, College of Education Professor to offer this nationally award-winning\, week-long environmental education workshop for pre-service elementary & ESE education students\, current elementary & ESE teachers\, and non-formal educators. Note: Middle school educators are welcome to participate as well! \nThe aim of this workshop is to provide participants with tools and information to interpret the natural world and impart the need for resource conservation to their audience. Using local\, state\, and national curricula correlated to Florida Standards\, participants will be given activities and resources to help foster environmental knowledge and good environmental stewardship in their students. \nEach day will feature different environmental subjects and professional speakers will be brought in to provide background knowledge to participants. Workshop sessions will conclude with a reflection and an evaluation of the day’s activities. Note: Middle school educators are welcome to participate as well! \nThe aim of this workshop is to provide participants with tools and information to interpret the natural world and impart the need for resource conservation to their audience. Using local\, state\, and national curricula correlated to Florida Standards\, participants will be given activities and resources to help foster environmental knowledge and good environmental stewardship in their students. \nEach day will feature different environmental subjects and professional speakers will be brought in to provide background knowledge to participants. DESCRIPTION:Learn about Florida’s well-known insect\, the mosquito! \n\n\nFamilies with youth aged 6-11 years old are invited to discover the fascinating world of Florida’s insects! Learn about what makes insects different from other animals\, where they live\, and their role in the food web. We’ll use Florida’s most well-known insect\, the mosquito\, as a study subject. \nMosquito Mania was designed to meet K-5 Next Generation Sunshine State Science Standards. The program is broken into three parts\, an interactive digital presentation\, an “insect zoo lab” with live specimens for hands-on observation\, and a build-a-mosquito craft to learn about the different body parts. Attendees will observe the mosquito lifecycle (eggs\, larvae\, pupae\, and adults) and the different aquatic predators of mosquito larvae. \nThis program will take place inside of the Weedon Island Preserve Cultural and Natural History Center. We will also talk about the implications of summarizing and “popularizing” results into ever-shorter soundbites\, designed for easy digestion by the general public\, but often at the expense of what the data actually tell us. \nThe target audience for this series is high school and older. \nThe first session in this four-part series will be an introduction to scientific literacy. The following three sessions will be a classroom style discussion looking at a specific science article and/or paper. DESCRIPTION:See what the training is all about in our two promo videos: Video 1 or Video 2 \nExploring Environmental Education Curriculum Options (ECO) Teacher Training Workshop \nThe University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension Pinellas County’s Natural Resources Agent has teamed up with St. Petersburg College\, College of Education Professor to offer this nationally award-winning\, week-long environmental education workshop for pre-service elementary & ESE education students\, current elementary & ESE teachers\, and non-formal educators. \nThe aim of this workshop is to provide participants with tools and information to interpret the natural world and impart the need for resource conservation to their audience. Using local\, state\, and national curricula correlated to Florida Standards\, participants will be given activities and resources to help foster environmental knowledge and good environmental stewardship in their students. \nEach day will feature different environmental subjects and professional speakers will be brought in to provide background knowledge to participants. Workshop sessions will conclude with a reflection and an evaluation of the day’s activities.
