SUMMARY:Killer Snails
DESCRIPTION:“Killer Snails: From beach to lab bench to bedside”\nwith Dr. Mandë Holford\nVenoms — molecules that evolved as toxins — have the power to transform lives. In this think + drink / science\, we trace the scientific path from mollusks to medicine\, examining how venom evolved over time in some predatory snails\, and how we can use this evolutionary knowledge as a roadmap for discovering and characterizing new compounds with therapeutic potential for treating pain and cancer. \nDr. Mandë Holford is an associate professor in Chemistry at Hunter College and CUNY-Graduate Center\, with scientific appointments at The American Museum of Natural History and Weill Cornell Medicine. She examines venoms and venomous animals as agents of change and innovation in evolution\, and in manipulating cellular physiology in pain and cancer. She is also cofounder of Killer Snails\, LLC\, an award winning EdTech company that uses tabletop\, digital\, and XR games about extreme creatures in nature as a conduit to advance scientific learning in K-12 classrooms. \n\nWhere: On Zoom\nCost: $3 for members of the Discovery Society; $5 for all others.\n\nRegister now to receive the Zoom access code

SUMMARY:ZOOM: Seahorses
DESCRIPTION:The Marine Discovery Center’s October online lecture will focus on “Exploring Seahorse Research at Bethune-Cookman University.”\n\nGuest speaker for this webinar will be Dr. Sarah Krejci\, assistant professor of biology and integrated environmental science at Bethune Cookman University in Daytona Beach.\nSeahorses are a unique group of fish which have captivated generations of people around the world. However\, their wild populations are facing threats from habitat loss\, collection for the aquarium and curio trades and climate change.\nKrejci and her students conduct research on laboratory and field populations of seahorses and their relatives\, the pipefish\, to illustrate the impacts that humans have on coastal ecosystems.\nKrejci will share highlights of their studies\, including photos and videos of their recent conjoined seahorse twins that were born in the university’s lab.\nThis lecture will introduce webinar attendees to the details of seahorse biology and ecology and students’ research projects from Bethune-Cookman University\, one of 101 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in America.\nKrejci will also discuss the importance of training diverse researchers\, as well as the barriers that racism presents for black students in science by sharing their stories and future aspirations.\n\nInterested guests for the October lecture may log in for the Zoom presentation at:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/…/reg…/WN_uXB4u12hT_CRUrVTSAon7Q\n\nThe program is free\, but participants must set up a personal Zoom account to access the webinar. MDC will continue to offer programs online during COVID-19 precautions for the remainder of 2020.\n\nFor more information about the lecture\, contact the Marine Discovery Center at 386-428-4828.
