DESCRIPTION:Celebrate International Archaeology Day at the Weedon Island Preserve! \n\n\n\n\n\nExamine ancient artifacts and discover the rich history of Tampa Bay at our celebration of International Archaeology Day at the Weedon Island Preserve! \nThe Alliance for Weedon Island Archaeological Research and Education (AWIARE) and the Central Florida Gulf Coast Archaeological Society (CGCAS) will be on-site with a diverse showcase of pre-Columbian artifacts from the Tampa Bay region and archaeological experts will be on-hand to illustrate the use of these tools and their importance to native populations. \nLocal fossil collectors are encouraged to bring in artifacts such as arrow heads\, lithics\, and pottery sherds for identification during Archaeology Day. No dollar value will be assigned or discussed\, but educational information will be generously shared. \nExplore the artifacts and talk with the archaeologists at your leisure anytime between 10am to 2pm. Also\, check out the 1\,100 year old dugout canoe on display in the Center and visit our free museum exhibit “Connecting People and Place” that tells the story of Weedon Island and its earliest inhabitants. \nThis event is suitable for all ages. DESCRIPTION:Turtle Bioartifacts\nAnd What They Can Teach Us \n\nExamine turtle bioartifacts and learn about turtle biology and ecology! \n\n\n\n\n\nDive into turtle science 101 with local herpetologist and environmental educator George L. Heinrich! This hands-on workshop will explore turtle bioartifacts (natural history objects) commonly found during nature forays. Numerous specimens of shells and skulls will allow us to learn about turtle anatomy and species diversity. We will also examine a variety of eggs and dissect gopher tortoise scat. Participants may also get to observe some of the Preserve’s resident gopher tortoises. \nThis workshop will take place outdoors\, under the covered pavilion adjacent to the Cultural and Natural History Center. This program is recommended for ages 16+ and youth should be accompanied by an adult. \nThis program is sponsored by the Friends of Weedon Island. The program sparks kids’ natural curiosity using imaginative play\, crafts\, stories\, songs and more! Please note: This program does not include Museum admission. \n\nOn Saturday\, June 4\, explore “In the Deep Ocean”\nOn Saturday\, June 11\, explore “Swirly Whirly Snails”\nOn Saturday\, June 18\, explore “Manatee Mischief”\nOn Saturday\, June 25\, explore “Busy Buzzin’ Bees”\nWhen/Where: 9-10am every Saturday in the Mosaic Backyard Universe\nCost: $12 per child for members of the Discovery Society; $15 per child for all others. (Includes one adult per child.)\nAdvance reservations required. Attendance limited to 12 children.\n\nRegister now\nThe Bishop follows the CDC’s COVID-19 Community Levels guidelines. SUMMARY:Youth Program: Mosquito Mania
DESCRIPTION:Have a future entomologist on your hands? Kids ages 6-11 are invited to learn about the wonderful world of insects! \n\n\n\n\n\nWe will discuss what makes insects different from other animals\, what they need to live\, their life cycle\, and then apply what we learn to mosquitoes. After the presentation attendees can explore live aquatic insect stations and use microscopes to view them up close! \nThis youth program is geared toward ages 6 to 12. Registration is required and space is limited. Please register just your child (children). This is not a drop-off program. \n>>> REGISTER HERE <<< \nPresented by Kailey Travis\, Environmental Specialist III with Pinellas County \nAdditional Notes: This program will be held in our auditorium. It takes about 10 minutes to drive from the preserve entrance (Keystone Rd.) to the parking lot\, and there is a 2-5 minute walk from the parking lot to the auditorium. Follow signs to the auditorium. We will start promptly at 10am.
