DESCRIPTION:Ages 13+\nJoin us for an interpretive walk to search for gopher tortoises & their burrows\, and learn about their role as ecosystem engineers! \n\n\nJoin us for our celebration of Gopher Tortoise Day! \nTake a guided tour to learn about the six species of North American tortoises\, with a special focus on our native gopher tortoise! We will explore how gopher tortoises are a keystone species and “ecosystem engingeers” then walk the trails to look for tortoises and learn how to “read” a tortoise burrow. \n>>> REGISTER HERE <<< \nThis is an easy interpretive walk (less than 1 mile) in the Preserve’s upland habitat. This tour is recommended for adults and youth ages 13+. \nThis tour will be led by guest educator George L. Heinrich. Mr. Heinrich is a field biologist and environmental educator specializing in Florida reptiles. His company\, Heinrich Ecological Services is based in St. Petersburg\, Florida and conducts wildlife surveys and research\, natural history programming\, and nature-based tours. George is currently the Executive Director of the Florida Turtle Conservation Trust.

DESCRIPTION:Join Dr. Margaret “Maggi” Brisbin and Pinellas County Sea Grant Agent Katie Mastenbrook for an opportunity to deep dive into the world of plankton. The presentation will cover plankton communities in the Tampa Bay region\, highlighting research on the plant plankton communities know as phytoplankton. \nDr. Brisbin will cover Pyrodinium bahamense (the toxin and light producing species that blooms in Upper Tampa Bay)\, Karenia brevis (Red Tide)\, and other lesser-known species important to the region. Dr. Brisbin will share how they monitor and study phytoplankton communities at USF and explain exciting recent research developments. DESCRIPTION:St. Petersburg’s annual Arbor Day Celebration\, the Green Thumb Festival\, brings together plant and flower lovers\, as well as\, individuals and families looking for a fun weekend activity. With more than 120 garden\, plant and flower vendors and exhibitors\, the annual event brings the community together for a weekend of fun. \nParking is available at Azalea Middle School and behind Walter Fuller Recreation Center. Handicap parking is located at the Walter Fuller Recreation Center’s main parking lot and the Walter Fuller Pool parking lot. \n\nYouth Activities & Adult Workshops\n\nAll workshops are free and open to the public. Spots are limited. Preregistration is encouraged. \nREGISTER HERE \n\n\nSaturday\, April 26 Program Schedule\n9:30 AM | Herb Planters (Adult Workshop)\nUF/IFAS Master Gardeners will discuss container herb gardening and assist with planter creation. Sponsored by Pinellas County Farm Bureau. \n11:00 AM | Attracting Animals to Your Yards (All Ages Interactive Presentation)\nLearn which native plants attract wildlife and pollinators. Participants will plant a native species in a takeaway container to grow at home. \n12:00 PM | From Seed to Slice: Creating a Pizza Garden with Kids (Family Interactive Presentation)\nCreate a pizza garden in a self-watering container or bucket! Youth will learn about plant growth\, self-watering systems\, and the benefits of homegrown food. \n1:00 PM | Botanical Printmaking with Gelli Prints (All Ages Workshop)\nCreate and take home beautiful\, one-of-a-kind artwork with amazing colors and textures using natural materials. \n2:00 PM | All About Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ (Adult Presentation)\nLearn how to apply the Nine Principles of Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ (FFL) for a beautiful\, low-maintenance\, and water-saving yard. Discover easy\, eco-friendly techniques that conserve resources and reduce costs.\n \nSunday\, April 27 Program Schedule\n9:30 AM | Mixed Flower Garden: Fillers\, Spillers\, and Thrillers (Adult Workshop)\nUF/IFAS Master Gardeners will guide attendees in designing flower planters. Plant and container selection will vary. Sponsored by Pinellas County Farm Bureau. \n11:00 AM | Nature’s Team Work (All Ages Presentation)\nDiscover how plants and animals interact in ecosystems through food\, shelter\, and camouflage. \n1:00 PM | Skulls and Tracks (All Ages Interactive Presentation)\nLearn to identify animal tracks and skulls in your yard or nature areas. Discover how skulls reveal an animal’s diet and create your own track ID guide. \n2:00 PM | Orchids 101 (Adult Presentation)\nMike Pollen will demonstrate how to repot an orchid and provide care tips. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFlower Show\n\nThe Garden Club of St. Petersburg displays their creativity through juried floral designs and crafts representing gardens from around the world. Exhibits are designed with a new theme each year. \nThe public is invited to vote for the best of show in both the horticulture and floral design category. \nJudging occurs the Friday before the festival and awards are given to the winners at the festival on Sunday at 3 p.m. inside Walter Fuller Recreation Center. All judges are from clubs within the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs District VIII and use standards set by the National Garden Clubs\, Inc. and use standards set by the National Garden Clubs\, Inc.
