DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Boyd Hill Nature Preserve and the St. Petersburg Parks and Recreation Department present the annual Natural History Speaker Series (NHSS)\, a program that offers fascinating presentations on the natural and cultural history of Florida by individuals who are authorities in their fields. \n\nConserving Gopher Tortoises at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve presentation by Jeffrey M. Goessling PhD\, Professor\, Eckerd College\n\nHave you ever walked the trails at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve and seen a gopher tortoise in the sandy upland habitat? Do you wonder how they are able to survive there? Come and learn more about them as our speaker shares his knowledge along with his findings from ongoing research efforts.\n\nSpeaker Bio: Jeff Goessling grew up in the hills of Kentucky where he gained a fascination and appreciation for nature. He earned his B.S. at Thomas More College\, his M.S. at Sam Houston State University\, and his PhD in the biological sciences at Auburn University. In January 2018 he joined the faculty at Eckerd College. He currently studies and monitors the gopher tortoise population at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve.

A great way to spread information regarding conservation is through social media productions. The NWF has begun screening a short film titled “Dear Tampa Bay” at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve. The twenty-minute film dives into the risk of climate change and the solutions needed for Tampa Bay to get ahead of these critical environmental issues. Through personal storytelling from community leaders located across the Gulf\, Dear Tampa Bay explains the vulnerability the region possesses in regard to climate related catastrophes. Tampa Bay is referred to as an area of high risk and low readiness. The region has large\, growing populations\, including communities with high social vulnerability and extensive development in flood-prone areas. The film addresses everything from sea level rise\, water quality and quantity\, to climate solutions and resilience strategies. Boyd Hill Nature Preserve is proud to be a partner to the National Wildlife Federation. DESCRIPTION:Conservation and Tracking\nSwallow-tailed Kites & Short-tailed Hawks \nJoin us to learn about the tracking of swallow-tailed kites and short-tailed hawks by the Avian Research and Conservation Institute. \nSwallow-tailed Kites (Elanoides forficatus) and Short-tailed Hawks (Buteo brachyurus) are two of Florida’s rarest and most special raptor species. The Avian Research and Conservation Institute (ARCI)\, based in Gainesville\, FL\, studies these raptors and tracks their movements and activity– including their presence at the Weedon Island Preserve! Join us for a presentation from Gina Kent of ARCI to hear about the latest conservation issues and status trends of these beautiful raptors. \nGina Kent has worked with ARCI since 2000 and is a Senior Conservation Scientist. She conducts bird surveys from small planes\, boats around the Florida Keys\, and climbs 100-foot-tall trees\, while working with many Florida specialty birds including Crested Caracara\, Swallow-tailed Kites\, Snail Kites\, Reddish Egrets\, White-crowned Pigeons\, and others. She is based in Florida but travels throughout the southeastern U.S. and internationally to research birds. Gina received an undergraduate degree in wildlife from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point\, and a master’s degree from the Georgia Southern University.
