SUMMARY:Florida-Friendly Landscaping: Water Efficiently
DESCRIPTION:FFL Principle Number 2\, “Water Efficiently\,” provides guidance on how to irrigate right and not over water. Save water and save money!\n\n\n\nThis is the third in a series of Florida-Friendly Landscaping webinars for residents of Pasco County! Please register for each individual webinar presentation of the series\, as the corresponding Zoom link will be sent out via email two days prior to the event. The Zoom link will only apply to the individual presentation.) \nAn efficient irrigation system conserves water and helps to ensure that fertilizer and other pollution doesn’t flow into water bodies. However\, even an efficient irrigation system can waste water if not appropriately programmed and regularly maintained. \nIf an irrigation system is present\, a rain shutoff device should be installed and maintained to prevent irrigation after a rain event. Don’t let the calendar tell you when to water – look to your plants for telltale signs of water stress and turn on your irrigation system manually instead of allowing the automatic controller to run on a set schedule. Hand watering\, microirrigation\, mulching and mowing at the highest setting are ways to reduce water use in your landscape. \nWhat you do in your landscape matters. From the fertilizers you apply to the water you use\, your gardening choices can have an impact on land\, water\, wildlife\, and the overall well-being of Florida’s residents. \nThe Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ (FFL) Program is here to help you learn how to have healthy and beautiful landscapes that protect Florida’s natural resources by following nine science-based principles: \n\nRight Plant\, Right Place\nWater Efficiently\nFertilize Appropriately\nMulch\nAttract Wildlife\nManage Yard Pests Responsibly\nRecycle Yard Waste\nReduce Stormwater Runoff\nProtect the Waterfront\n\nA Florida-Friendly landscape can be designed to look the way you want\, fit the aesthetics of your community\, and suit your lifestyle\, while being environmentally sustainable. Join us to learn how! \n>>> WEBINAR REGISTRATION <<< \nAfter registering for this webinar presentation\, you will be emailed the Zoom link 2 days prior to the event. \nThis lecture is presented by Kate Kaste\, UF/IFAS Extension Pasco County\, FFL Program Manager.

SUMMARY:Women of Pinellas: Shaping Bird Protection in the Early 20th Century
DESCRIPTION:Learn about the pioneer women of Pinellas and how they influenced legislation to protect birds during the early 20th century\n\n\n\nJoin Quinton Spiaggi\, volunteer research associate at the Palm Harbor Museum\, in this informative presentation about the pioneer women of Pinellas and how they influenced legislation to protect birds during the early 20th century. Women like Katherine B. Tippetts\, Elizabeth Skinner Jackson\, Dr. Grace Whitford\, Myrtle Scharrer Betz\, and Lucy Platt Hayes were instrumental in social change during this time period\, and we even owe the concept of state birds\, like Florida’s northern mockingbird\, to their efforts. Considered leaders across Pinellas County and the state of Florida during their lifetime\, much of their work has been forgotten until recently. \nThis program is free and is aimed at all ages\, and will feature items from the Palm Harbor Museum’s collection. \n>>> RESERVE A SPOT <<<

SUMMARY:Birding Myakka River State Park
DESCRIPTION:Note that this is a mid-week trip! We will meet at 8:00 am at the Myakka River State Park Ranger Station on Wednesday.  Take the first right into the parking area after you pay the entrance fee ($4 for single occupant vehicle\, $6 for up to 8 occupants). We will check the river there\, then drive and walk to various locations in the park where incoming migrants seem to be congregating.\n\nThis park has 37 miles of hiking trails\, but we will only cover a small portion of the park. We will mostly stay within the 7 miles of drivable trail. Walking is easy on the boardwalk but may be harder in other areas of the park.  Additionally\, there is a canopy walk that we can explore if it is open\, but it would be based on the desire of the group.\n\nBring water\, snacks\, insect repellent and lunch if you want to picnic in the park. A hat is recommended since we will probably be in unshaded areas at least part of the time.\n\nContact trip leader Mary Keith at mary.keith@tampaaudubon.org  to register and receive updates.
