DESCRIPTION:Have a future entomologist on your hands? Kids ages 6-11 are invited to learn about the wonderful world of insects! \n\n\n\n\n\nWe will discuss what makes insects different from other animals\, what they need to live\, their life cycle\, and then apply what we learn to mosquitoes. After the presentation attendees can explore live aquatic insect stations and use microscopes to view them up close! \nThis youth program is geared toward ages 6 to 12. SUMMARY:Nature Coast Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Nature Coast Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society meets the second Tuesday of every month at 7:00 PM at The Land O’ Lakes Heritage Park Community Center\, 5401 Land O’ Lakes Blvd/US 41\, Land O’ Lakes\, 34639\, between SR 52 and SR 54. The subject of the September 13\, 2022 meeting is “Native Ferns of West Central Florida”\, presented by James Stevenson\, an Extension Specialist with the University of Florida IFAS Extension Services in Pinellas County. \nFerns\, which reproduce by spores\, are the second-most diverse group of vascular plants on Earth and one of the oldest groups of plants\, with a fossil record dating to nearly 400 million years ago. Their size range from over 60 feet tall to tiny plants\, millimeters in size. Ferns are found in a variety of large naturally occurring communities\, from tropical to northern forests and semiarid deserts. In Florida\, most fern species can be found in damp and shady areas; rock crevices\, bogs\, swamps\, acid wetlands and as epiphytes on tropical or even temperate trees. During this presentation we will explore the fascinating world of these ancient plants\, study the natural history of ferns and get identification tips plus interesting facts. \nJames works out of the Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center in Tarpon Springs. There he teaches classes on a variety of natural resource conservation topics\, including: plant identification\, botany\, entomology\, ecology and particular groups of native plants such as ferns\, wetland wildflowers and epiphytes. Exploring the natural world has been James’ passion since growing up in Clearwater.  He received his Bachelor’s degree in Plant Ecology from the University of the South in Sewanee\, TN and then worked in botanical gardens around the world; from North Carolina to Europe & Israel.  Before returning to Florida in 2006\, James worked in the UK on his advanced degree at the Royal Botanic Gardens\, Kew and as the Assistant Curator at the University of Oxford Botanic Garden.  James doesn’t really understand gardening in Florida\, so he now grows orchids and watches birds. \nMeetings of the Chapter are free\, and all interested parties are invited to attend and bring questions about their yard. There will not be any refreshments or drinks available\, so everyone needs to bring their own. SUMMARY:Birds of Brooker Hike
DESCRIPTION:Have you wondered what bird is singing in your backyard? \n\n\n\n\n\nDo you see and hear birds but don’t know who they are? If so\, join us for a Beginning Bird Hike to learn how to identify the county’s common birds as we meander along a one-mile trail. Registration is required. \nThis is a free hike\, however space is limited. Please be courteous and do not register unless you plan to attend and cancel your reservation if you can no longer attend. \nGuided Hike Information \nVolunteer Hike Guides will meet participants outside the Exhibit Hall 10 minutes before the scheduled start time. We strongly suggest all hikers visit the restroom (located in the Classroom Building) before we begin as there are no facilities along the trail. \n\nGuided hikes are under a mile in length\, much of which is on unimproved\, uneven sandy trails.\n\n\nHikes take about two (2) hours to complete.\n\n\nPlease wear sturdy\, closed-toe shoes\, sneakers or boots.\n\n\nInsect repellent (bug spray) is strongly recommended in summer months.\n\n\nBring plenty of drinking water and a snack.\n\n\nA hat\, sunglasses\, and sunscreen are also recommended.\n\n\nPets are not permitted.\n\n\nNo smoking is allowed.\n\n\nTrained volunteers will guide the hike.\n\n>>> REGISTER HERE <<<

SUMMARY:Dim the Lights for Birds at Night!
DESCRIPTION:The year 2022 is a critical year for efforts to protect our Planet\, as the world will come together to agree on a Global Biodiversity Framework\, – a Paris-style agreement for nature\, representing a once in a decade opportunity for countries to reverse nature loss and build a more nature-positive future. \nMany issues threaten the future of our shared home. One of those issues is light pollution\, which is increasing globally by at least two percent a year. Light pollution wastes energy and impacts the entire ecosystem\, including millions of migratory birds. Did you know that most birds migrate at night? Artificial light attracts and disorients nocturnally migrating birds\, making them more likely to land in areas where they are more vulnerable to collisions and other dangers. Light pollution also impacts birds in other ways\, disrupting their internal clocks\, long-distance migrations\, as well as other vital behaviors. \nWorld Migratory Bird Day\, which is celebrated on both the second Saturday in May (14th) and October (8th)\, celebrates the migration of birds across countries and continents. This year\, the campaign will be focusing on the issue of light pollution and the negative effects it is having on migratory birds. With the theme “Dim the Lights for Birds at Night!” the campaign will promote steps that individuals\, communities\, and governments can take to reduce the impact of light pollution on birds. It will also be used to promote best practice guidelines which are being developed under the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) to address this growing issue and to ensure that action is taken globally to help birds migrate safely. \nEarthhour and all that it represents has grown to become more than just an hour\, it is a movement for our future\, our planet and #ForNature – including for millions of migratory birds which migrate across our skies at night! \nLet’s come together and use #EarthHour and the upcoming #WorldMigratoryBirdDay on 14 MAy and 8 October 2022 to also raise awareness about the impact of light pollution on migrating birds and take steps to “Dim the Lights for Birds at Night”! \nLearn more about Earthhour here and learn more about the impact of light pollution on migratory birds here.

DESCRIPTION:Join Tampa Bay Watch and Audubon Florida for the 29th Annual Fishing Line Island Cleanup. \nThe goal is to remove hazardous monofilament line from mangrove shorelines. Monofilament or “mono\,” is a fancy word for the commonly used plastic fishing line. It has great fishing utility\, but can take over 600 years to break down and poses serious threats to birds and other wildlife. Improperly discarded mono and fishing gear leads to wildlife entanglement\, accidental hooks\, and ingestion. \nThis will be a self-led event\, where participants will travel out to their designated location by personal boat/other watercraft any day between October 15-23 to target shorelines where cast line has been caught in the tree line. Volunteers will compile the recovered monofilament\, to be collected\, cleaned\, and recycled. \nThere are a variety of sites in which to participate—all critical bird nesting habitat—throughout Pinellas\, Hillsborough\, and Manatee. \n\nClick here to register to volunteer for this event.

DESCRIPTION:The Preserve Work Days are hosted by the Friends of Brooker Creek Preserve! \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Return The Preserve Work Days focus on areas of the preserve where exotic invasive vegetation and unnatural overgrowth exists.  It is our goal to help return the preserve to its natural beauty. \nWorking with FOBCP leadership and Preserve staff\, volunteers provide the much needed hands-on support necessary to remove nuisance plants providing a more healthy environment for native wildlife. \nRegistration is required. This event is capped at 25 volunteers. In addition\, the Volunteer Form must be completed and brought with you the day of the event. \n>>> REGISTER HERE <<< \nThis Work Day will be focusing on the Friends Trail located at the end of Lora Lane. Lora Lane is located a 1/2 mile west of the main Brooker Entrance off of Keystone. You travel one mile on Lora Lane until the road ends\, and park. Registered participants will meet at 7:45\, start at 8:00\, and work until 11:00. \nImportant notes: There are no facilities or restrooms at this site. \nPlease bring clippers\, loppers\, hand saws\, gloves\, hat\, and sunscreen. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate International Archaeology Day at the Weedon Island Preserve! \n\n\n\n\n\nExamine ancient artifacts and discover the rich history of Tampa Bay at our celebration of International Archaeology Day at the Weedon Island Preserve! \nThe Alliance for Weedon Island Archaeological Research and Education (AWIARE) and the Central Florida Gulf Coast Archaeological Society (CGCAS) will be on-site with a diverse showcase of pre-Columbian artifacts from the Tampa Bay region and archaeological experts will be on-hand to illustrate the use of these tools and their importance to native populations. \nLocal fossil collectors are encouraged to bring in artifacts such as arrow heads\, lithics\, and pottery sherds for identification during Archaeology Day. No dollar value will be assigned or discussed\, but educational information will be generously shared. \nExplore the artifacts and talk with the archaeologists at your leisure anytime between 10am to 2pm. Also\, check out the 1\,100 year old dugout canoe on display in the Center and visit our free museum exhibit “Connecting People and Place” that tells the story of Weedon Island and its earliest inhabitants. \nThis event is suitable for all ages. SUMMARY:29th Annual Fishing Line Island Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Join Tampa Bay Watch and Audubon Florida for the 29th Annual Fishing Line Island Cleanup. \nThe goal is to remove hazardous monofilament line from mangrove shorelines. Monofilament or “mono\,” is a fancy word for the commonly used plastic fishing line. It has great fishing utility\, but can take over 600 years to break down and poses serious threats to birds and other wildlife. Improperly discarded mono and fishing gear leads to wildlife entanglement\, accidental hooks\, and ingestion. \nThis will be a self-led event\, where participants will travel out to their designated location by personal boat/other watercraft any day between October 15-23 to target shorelines where cast line has been caught in the tree line. Volunteers will compile the recovered monofilament\, to be collected\, cleaned\, and recycled. \nThere are a variety of sites in which to participate—all critical bird nesting habitat—throughout Pinellas\, Hillsborough\, and Manatee. \n\nClick here to register to volunteer for this event.
