SUMMARY:Archaeology Works: Heritage Monitoring Scouts
DESCRIPTION:Heritage Monitoring Scouts (HMS Florida) is a public engagement program focused on tracking changes to archaeological sites at risk\, particularly those impacted by climate change in the form of erosion and sea level rise. Join archaeologists from the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) for this information session to learn how to become a heritage monitoring scout. FPAN will discuss threats to archaeological sites\, how to identify some common site types and artifacts\, and the best way to record and monitor them. \nFollowing this introductory session\, FPAN will do a short hike in the Weedon Island Preserve to do a hands-on training of how HMS tracks data on archaeological sites. For more information on this program go to www.fpan.us/HMSflorida \nQuestions or concerns? Please contact Weedon Island Preserve ta 727-453-6500 or weedonisland@pinellascounty.org. \nRegistration: https://www.eventbrite.com/o/weedon-island-preserve-cultural-and-natural-history-center-1250121017

SUMMARY:Archaeology of the Anclote River Region
DESCRIPTION:Archaeology Talk: \nInvestigations into the Archaeology of the Anclote River Region \nInvestigations into the Archaeology of the Anclote River Region \nPhyllis E. Kolianos\, M.A.\, RPA\nAlliance for Weedon Island Archaeological Research and Education\, Inc. \nWithin Central Peninsula Gulf Coast\, the archaeology of the Anclote River is understudied and underreported relative to other population centers. In the late 1800s\, S. T. Walker and F. H. Cushing noted the importance of the mounds and pre-Columbian sites on the banks of the river\, and both investigated the Safford (Ormond) Mound\, 8PI3\, near the upstream riverine system\, a reused burial mound dating over 1\,500 years. Almost 20 years of investigations into the archaeology of the Anclote River region reveal some important results that support recent research at other major sites and suggest shifting population settlements and sea-level change. \nPhyllis received her BA and MA degrees from the University of South Florida in Applied Anthropology\, and in 2009 received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the USF\, Department of Anthropology. In her past position with Pinellas County\, she supported the archaeological programs and activities at Weedon Island Preserve and was instrumental in the establishment of the Alliance for Weedon Island Archaeological Research and Education\, Inc. (AWIARE) and their research station at the Preserve. Kolianos has worked for many years with the investigation and recording of area sites\, and has been active with public archaeology projects\, grants\, and archaeological research projects involving Weedon Island’s cultural resources and other lands within Pinellas County. Her most recent and on-going project is the archaeology of the Anclote River region. \nRegistration: https://www.eventbrite.com/o/weedon-island-preserve-cultural-and-natural-history-center-1250121017

SUMMARY:Volunteers needed for oyster shell bar projects at MacDill
DESCRIPTION:Tampa Bay Watch is suspending all scheduled volunteer projects\, environmental education field trips\, and special events at least through the month of April since our number one priority is the health and safety of our supporters\, volunteers\, and staff. We will continue to monitor and reassess the situation with hopes of resuming our programs in May. Please check our website for further updates. \nClick here to read a statement from Peter Clark\, our President and Founder\, on Tampa Bay Watch’s response to the Coronavirus. \nHelping hands are needed to assist in building a series of oyster shell bars at MacDill AFB on the mornings of March 5\, 6\, 19\, & 20. The project involves shoveling fossilized shell into mesh bags and transporting the bags to the shoreline. It is pretty physical labor with oyster shell bags weighing around 30 pounds each. The goal is to restore lost habitat systems to the bay\, prevent further erosion of the shoreline and improve water quality through natural biological filtration.\n\nThe deadline for volunteer registration is one week prior to the project to allow time for security clearance\, so you’ll be pre-approved for entry.\n\nClick a date below to register as a volunteer for this event:\n\nMarch 5\, March 6\, March 19\, and March 20

DESCRIPTION:These classes take place online in a webinar room. Registered participants will receive the web link via email at the time of registration.  \nUpcoming Webinars & Topics\n\nSeptember 9 – At Home In A Cypress Dome\n\nCypress domes are small swamps dominated by cypress trees. In these special wetlands you will find plants and animals perfectly-suited for life with their “feet wet.” Join us and let’s see what we can discover! \n\nSeptember 16 – Channel X\, Re-taking a Man-made Waterway\n\nAlthough Brooker Creek Preserve exists more-or-less in its original state\, development all around has created the necessity to channel some of the flow to prevent flooding. We’ll explore a man-made channel\, and channel the energy of the plants and animals found there! \n\nSeptember 23 – On Brooker Pond\n\nCertain areas of Brooker Creek Preserve contain large ponds/small lakes. Let’s dive in and discover submerged\, emergent and floating plants\, and perhaps some wildlife at home there! \n\nSeptember 30 – A Flooded Forest\n\nIn this session\, we’ll stomp through the swamp and explore a flooded hardwood forest. The boardwalks around the Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center cut through a flooded forest dominated by tupelo and sweetbay trees. What will we find there? Tune in to find out. \nParticipants can register for one or more of the topics by clicking the titles(s) above.  \nRegistration is required.
