DESCRIPTION:Come out for this “early morning” walk in the woods. \nCome out for this “early morning” walk in the woods with Alexa\, our awesome volunteer\, to seek out the resident and visiting birds of Brooker. Beginners and all levels of birders welcome. Meet in the parking lot at 8:00 a.m. \nThis is a free hike\, however space is limited. Please be courteous and do not register unless you plan to attend and cancel your reservation if you can no longer attend. \n>>> REGISTER HERE <<< \nGuided Hike Information \nVolunteer Hike Guides will meet participants in the parking lot 10 minutes before the scheduled start time. We strongly suggest all hikers visit the restroom (located in the Classroom Building) before we begin as there are no facilities along the trail. \n\nGuided hikes are under a mile in length\, much of which is on unimproved\, uneven sandy trails.\n\n\nHikes take about two (2) hours to complete.\n\n\nPlease wear sturdy\, closed-toe shoes\, sneakers or boots.\n\n\nInsect repellent (bug spray) is strongly recommended in summer months.\n\n\nBring plenty of drinking water and a snack.\n\n\nA hat\, sunglasses\, and sunscreen are also recommended.\n\n\nPets are not permitted.\n\n\nNo smoking is allowed.\n\n\nTrained volunteers will guide the hike.\n\nAdditional Notes: It takes about 10 minutes to drive from the preserve entrance (Keystone Rd.) to the parking lot.

Produced by National Museums Scotland\, this exhibition celebrates the extraordinary legacy of John James Audubon (1785 –1851). It tells the story of this iconic artist\, naturalist\, and ornithologist\, as well as the evolution of one of the world’s rarest\, largest\, and possibly most coveted books\, The Birds of America. \nThe exhibition features over 40 of these splendid hand-colored prints\, as well as additional illustrations\, books\, letters\, photographs\, and ephemera. The majority of these delicate pieces have never been shown in public and have undergone years of conservation treatment in preparation for their inaugural display and tour. \nCome and join us on a docent-led tour on Saturday\, December 7 at 10:30 a.m. for 20 people. The Audubon Florida rooftop-nesting program is vital to preserving bird populations that have suffered habitat loss due to human development\, and need to find alternative habitat to successfully raise their young. Kara will discuss how Audubon monitors rooftop-nesting seabirds and shorebirds and how volunteers can get involved in community science efforts to help these imperiled birds. This is definitely an early-bird excursion\, with the bus boarding at 7 a.m. to take advantage of a full day of birding. \nCoffeepot Bayou Bird Island Audubon’s Jeff Liechy takes the helm of Tampa Bay Watch’s Discovery Eco-Tour Boat for an evening trip and a close-up view of colonial waterbirds. (They won’t be nesting so we won’t disturb them.) \nOutback Key and Lower Terra Ceia Bay Eric Plage and Holley Short will lead this boat trip to two of the region’s prime birding spots. An ephemeral barrier island\, Outback Key isn’t easily accessible so the birds are extraordinarily comfortable with visitors. The Pinellas National Wildlife Refuge is a roosting site for Magnificent Frigatebirds. \nFort De Soto by land David Goodwin and Jim Eager are back again with trips for advanced birders on Saturday and Sunday morning. Fort De Soto is a 1\,136-acre park covering five connected islands that is a haven for migrating neo-tropicals as well as diverse shorebirds. \nLower Green Swamp by wagon Once a working cattle ranch\, the 12\,800-acre preserve is being restored by Hillsborough County. You’ll get a behind-the-scenes view because the staff working on the restoration will lead the trip. You’ll cross grasslands\, open wooded areas\, pine forests and a large wetland area\, so you’ll see an amazing diversity of birds\, from Bald Eagles to Bachman Sparrows. \nCheck out https://www.floridabirdingandnaturefestival.org/schedule.html and grab those spots while you still can! \nSeminars & Free Nature Expo!\nWhile field trips get the most attention\, we have an incredible lineup of presentations planned along with a free Nature Expo featuring local organizations and naturalists. Once phosphate mining is complete\, Mosaic reclaims land and then manages it with fire to provide optimum habitat for the endemic species.\nMarc Minno literally wrote the books on Florida butterflies. Join him for this presentation and then a field trip through the Fred and Idah Schultz Preserve where diverse habitats make it THE place for a wide variety of butterflies.\nDan Huber at the University of Tampa is an expert on the biomechanics of sharks and how understanding their mechanical functions contribute to their position as an apex predator for millions of years.\n\nKeynote speakers you won’t want to miss! \nTo be published in September\, Audubon’s Birds of Florida is the latest from Clay Henderson\, former president of Audubon Florida. Henderson followed Audubon’s footsteps and paddled in his wake to look for birds in the same places. His previous book\, Forces of Nature\, celebrates the people and organizations who made Florida a leader in state-funded conservation and land management. \n  \n  \nParticipants in last year’s birding festival logged a total of 145 species of birds\, ranging from Wild Turkeys to Magnificant Frigatebirds. It’s not likely that one person saw all of them in the four days of the festival\, but our schedule during peak migration season means that we’ll see birds that we otherwise would miss. Peregrines have adapted well in urban environments and counts at Hawk Watches have been very high. The program features live falcons! Mangroves\, mudflats\, oyster bars\, and open bay provide bird and wildlife habitat here\, one of the few natural shorelines remaining. Once or twice a year\, we meet to remove the trash that washes in on high tide and other debris from the Sanctuary. Wear long sleeves and pants\, closed toe/walk in the water and mud shoes.
