SUMMARY:Branching Out: Your Voice\, Our Trees
DESCRIPTION:A community conversation on urban trees in public spaces. \nTalk About Trees \nJoin us for a world cafe where we will talk about trees and their role in our communities! \nPinellas County is embarking on the development of their first-ever Urban Forestry Master Plan for unincorporated and they are seeking YOUR input to help guide this plan. Urban trees play a critical role in our daily lives and the County wants to ensure they are managed in a resilient and sustainable manner. It’s very important to the County to get your input about trees in our public spaces so they can better understand the benefits and challenges about urban trees. \nWhat is a world cafe? \nWe will create a comfortable environment where you will feel encouraged to talk to fellow participants at roundtables about trees! Different tables will have different questions. You will get a chance to hear from your community members on their thoughts while also expressing your own. You will rotate around to different tables with different questions where your thoughts will be documented. Following the forum\, all of the input provided will be summarized and provided to the County to identify common themes that will help guide their Urban Forestry Master Plan. \nWho can participate? \nAnyone that lives in unincorporated areas of Pinellas County. Unsure? Check out this map. \nThis is a unique opportunity for you to share your feedback! \nRefreshments will be provided. We want to hear from you. Don’t delay and register today!

SUMMARY:Archaeology Lecture: Discoveries from the Garrison
DESCRIPTION:The Garrison Neighborhood\, established in 1896\, was the first Black-owned neighborhood in Tampa. \n\n\nArchaeology lecture hosted by the Central Gulf Coast Archaeological Society (CGCAS) and the Alliance for Weedon Island Archaeological Research and Education (AWIARE). \nThe Garrison Neighborhood\, established in 1896\, was the first Black-owned neighborhood in Tampa. Until the 1940s the neighborhood flourished with Black-owned businesses\, schools\, and churches. Despite this\, few mentions of the neighborhood exist in archaeological reports of the area. Downtown Tampa’s archaeological requirements prioritizes the National Register eligible Fort Brooke site\, leaving this unique Black neighborhood underutilized in the study of Tampa’s diverse early pioneers. Since 2016 Stantec has been excavating portions of the Garrison\, including the Caesar Street School\, an African Methodist Episcopal Church\, storefronts\, and numerous residences. Through the artifact assemblages of these sites a greater understanding can be gleaned of life in this important Tampa neighborhood. \nThis lecture will feature Kelsey Kreiser\, an archaeologist at a local Stantec office in Tampa. She has been working in cultural resource management since 2018\, conducting fieldwork across much of Florida and the greater southeastern United States. \nLearn more about CGCAS & AWIARE’s archaeology lecture series. \n>>> REGISTER HERE <<<

SUMMARY:Budding Romances!
DESCRIPTION:An entertaining exploration of bugs and bloomers. \nSex is a driving force that shapes the lives of all living things\, so animals and plants have more in common than you might think. What is this force that unifies us all? How does it function? What are some of the astonishing\, outrageous\, and wildly bizarre ways that Nature gets the job done? Armed with his camera and thinking cap\, John Lampkin has been photo-documenting some answers over the past 25 years in gardens far and wide. Including Brooker Creek. This program will amaze\, entertain and educate on mating like you’ve never seen it before! Geared towards adults. \nThis program is recommended for an adult audience only. \n>>> REGISTER HERE <<< \nAdditional Notes: It takes about 10 minutes to drive from the preserve entrance (Keystone Rd.) to the parking lot\, and there is a 2-5 minute walk from the parking lot to the Education Center buildings. This program meets in the Auditorium \nThis program is sponsored by the Friends of Brooker Creek Preserve. \nSpeaker Bio: John Lampkin is an avid naturalist and Nature photographer with credits in many field guides\, books\, journals\, websites and blogs\, and he won the 2020 “American Butterflies” magazine photo contest. As a professional composer\, his woodwind quintet\, “Insects: A Musical Entomology in Six Legs” won the Grand Prize in a Composers Guild international competition. John also constructs crossword puzzles for the New York Times\, Wall Street Journal\, the LA Times and other venues\, with many of his puzzles having Nature themes. Except for his fascination with bugs and plants he is totally harmless.

SUMMARY:Birds\, Native Plants & Lunch
DESCRIPTION:We will visit two small gems in Largo (descriptions below)\, have lunch at PJ’s Oyster Bar (outside dining). Wilcox Nursery\, which carries many native plants\, is nearby for anyone shopping to improve their native gardens.\n\nThe morning starts at the John R. Bonner Nature Trail at 8:00 a.m. (14444 143rd St N\, Largo\, FL 33774). From the Florida Birding Trail: John R. Bonner Nature Trail is a “small spot of green in urban Pinellas County\, this city park’s cool\, shady hammock attracts migrating songbirds in spring and fall. Walk the woodland trails (paved and crushed shell) on either side of the park’s entrance road looking for species such as Yellow-billed Cuckoo\, Red-eyed Vireo\, Hooded Warbler\, Louisiana Waterthrush\, Yellow-breasted Chat\, Summer Tanager and Wood Thrush. Wading birds like Great Egret forage at the pond near the parking area. A 460-foot boardwalk leads out to a covered platform set among the mangroves on the Intracoastal Waterway; watch here for gulls\, terns\, shorebirds\, waterfowl and wading birds like Reddish Egret\, Green Heron\, Black-crowned Night-Heron and Roseate Spoonbill. Osprey\, Brown Pelican and Double-crested Cormorant are common all year. Watch for Northern Rough-winged Swallow and Cooper’s Hawk in spring and Gray Kingbird in fall.”\n\n“Also known as the “Turtle Park” for its abundant aquatic turtle population\, the George C McGough Nature Park is a 26-acre park located along the Intracoastal Waterway.  The Nature Center houses live animal exhibits\, including 22 rescued\, non-releasable birds (owls\, hawks & an eagle)\, and offers several environmental education programs. Our nature trails\, including a comfortable rubberized walking trail\, are a great way to see the natural beauty of Florida. Also included are outside shelters and a playground with a kid’s zipline. No dogs\, including service dogs\, are allowed in the park because of the captive birds on the property.”\n\nContact trip leader Mic McCarty at mic.mccarty@tampaaudubon.org to register and receive updates.\n\nImportant! Pre-registration is required\, and participation is limited. Please do not attend this or any Tampa Audubon Society events if you have flu\, cold\, or covid symptoms. Tampa Audubon is committed to reducing the spread of illnesses. The health and safety of our members is of the highest priority.
