Part of our commitment to foster a community that supports insect conservation is to engage citizens in the collection of data on the health of our insect populations. \nYou are invited to join others in the community for a fun\, citizen-science effort to record as many species of plants and insects at Eagle Lake Park on June 28th. This “Bio-Blitz” using the iNaturalist phone app (free) will give us an idea of the density and diversity of pollinators and the plants they depend on in one park in our county. SUMMARY:Advanced Plant Identification - 4-Part Series
DESCRIPTION:This four-part plant identification series will introduce participants to the steps required to positively identify plants. \nPlant identification is based on close observation of morphological characteristics\, contextual clues and lots of practice. This four–part advanced plant identification series will introduce participants to these concepts and the associated vocabulary of the plant scientist. \nThe class follows the contents of Harrington’s “How to Identify Plants” (1957); a copy of which is provided to each registrant. This concise text contains a comprehensive vocabulary of terms and illustrations to help clarify concepts. \nA packet of supplemental educational materials will also be provided to each registrant. \nAbout this Event \nDuring each 4-hour classroom event\, participants will engage in a participatory lecture\, and have plenty of time for Q & A. The final session will be a hands-on workshop that will include graduates from previous courses. Each session will build on the previous; attending the entire series is recommended. \nClasses are four consecutive Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Bio-breaks are factored into the schedule for each day! SUMMARY:Why Snakes Are Cool
DESCRIPTION:Learn about Florida’s native snakes and get the chance to see some live animals up-close!\n\n\nSnakes play important ecological roles as both predator and prey\, yet they remain highly misunderstood animals. Florida is home to 46 native species of snakes\, and\, like all animals\, they present little danger when left alone. Herpetologist and environmental educator George L. Heinrich will dispel snake myths and misunderstandings to teach participants about why snakes are cool! We will explore Florida snake diversity\, natural history\, conservation\, and snake safety. \nAt the end of the program a selection of live snakes will be available for viewing and handling if participants choose to do so — and we hope that you will! \nThis program will be led by George L. Heinrich\, a field biologist and environmental educator specializing in Florida reptiles. His company\, Heinrich Ecological Services is based in St. Petersburg\, Florida and conducts wildlife surveys and research\, natural history programming\, and nature-based tours.
