Insect Galls: Talk & Walk

January 29, 2022 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Free
Let us introduce you to the intriguing world of galls!

These alien-looking growths are found on plants around the world and are hiding tiny secrets: bugs! We will explore the common species of galling insects in Florida and the Tampa Bay area. Special attention will be given to the wasp family Cynipidae, one of the most specialized and fascinating groups of parasitic insects in the world. After an indoor presentation we will move outside for a gall hunt, exploring the native galls of Brooker Creek and how they contribute to local biodiversity!

Presented by Christine Leonard. Recommended for adults.

Sponsored by the Friends of Brooker Creek Preserve

Additional Notes: It takes about 10 minutes to drive from the preserve entrance (Keystone Rd.) to the parking lot, and there is a 2-5 minute walk from the parking lot to the Education Center buildings.

UF/IFAS Extension provides practical education you can trust, to help people, businesses and communities solve problems, develop skills and build a better future.
