Excess Development, Environmental Toxins, and

the Need for a Better Way Forward

This inaugural film festival will be a day-long symposium in which ecologically-minded films will be shown that present causes, effects, and solutions. Films will be followed by discussions with ecologists, environmental advocates, and filmmakers followed by a question-and-answer opportunity with the audience. Along with the films and discussions, local and regional environmental organizations will have representatives providing information on particular environmental needs and volunteer opportunities for attendees.

ADMISSION: $10 for 1 film; $15 for 2 films;  $20 for all day;  students $5 /$8 /$10

12:45pm   BLUE

(2018, directed by Karina Holden, 76 minutes)

BLUE takes us on a provocative journey into the ocean realm, witnessing a critical moment in time when the marine world is on a precipice. Featuring passionate advocates for ocean preservation, BLUE takes us into their world where the story of our changing ocean is unfolding. We meet those who are defending habitats, campaigning for smarter fishing, combating marine pollution and fighting for the protection of keystone species. This feature documentary comes at a time when we are making critical decisions that will decide the legacy we leave for generations to come. BLUE shows us there is a way forward and the time to act is now. Films will be followed by discussions and questions from the audience.

(40 min) Director KC Schulberg

Calusa Waterkeeper’s documentary, “Troubled Waters.”This short film will feature expert scientists and doctors as they explore the human health impacts of cyanotoxins and BMAA in South Florida.

                GOING COASTAL

(5 min) Ernesto Lasso de la Vega (Director)

Going Coastal is a comedy with an interaction with a fisherman and a mermaid.

Films will be followed by discussions and questions from the audience.

Chef Caroline Pheasant of Pheasant Catering will be serving a spectacular organic salad along with a grazing table, an exciting selection of charcuterie, assorted cheeses, farm to table fruits and vegetables, a variety of nuts, olives, artisan crackers, and non-GMO bread, handmade pimento cheese and hummus.  5:45pm     SAVING FLORIDA’S SPRINGS

(2017, directed by Sami Kattan, 40 minutes)

A journey into the history, beauty, and threats faced by the Florida Springs and their connection to the Floridan Aquifer. This second installment of the documentary film series, The Global Connection presents what threatens these springs and what can be done to ensure their health for generations to come.  Films will be followed by discussions and questions from the audience.

(2017, directed by Bo Landin, 95 minutes)

“Narrated by Harrison Ford, this award-winning documentary film portrays the efforts of ethnobotanist Paul Alan Cox and his team at Brain Chemistry Labs, a nonprofit research consortium in Jackson, Wyoming, to find and fight environmental triggers for neurodegenerative illnesses. It explores a role for toxins in the environment including those produced by cyanobacteria in algal blooms as possible triggers for ALS and Alzheimer’s disease.”  Films will be followed by discussions and questions from the audience.
