The Quick & Easy: Gadgets for the Home exhibit presents a fun look at the labor saving devices used by “modern housewives” to tackle pesky domestic chores. Wednesday through Sunday, 10am-4pm, Connecting People and Place Exhibit Gallery at Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive N.E., St. Petersburg. Explore the exciting, and sometimes unbelievable history of Weedon Island Preserve and the Tampa Bay estuary at the recently opened Connecting People and Place Exhibit Gallery. Staged among six galleries, the Exhibit Gallery is an art-inspired, hands-on educational showcase of the area’s history, ecology, and people. For the past 2,000 years, there has never been a dull moment in this corner of Pinellas County. This Exhibit Gallery is a great experience for the entire family. Continuing through Feb. 1, Art Exhibit, Obscured by Time: Discovering Florida’s Gulf Coast Ancient People, at The Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive N.E. St. Petersburg. Experience Artist Hermann Trappman’s talent as his work depicts the early people of Florida as he paints images of past cultures in ecological scenes of rich estuarine environment of this region. Trappman studies forensic sculpture to understand the physical nature of his subjects and he works with archaeologists to create native prehistoric existence. Speaker, Dr. Thomas Crisman, Title of Talk: Florida, Current and Anticipated Changes and Uncertainties From Global Warming. Thomas Crisman is an Aquatic Ecologist with broad experience on the ecology, conservation, and management of lakes, streams and wetlands in Florida, and throughout the tropics and subtropics.  Following a 30-year career at the University of Florida, he joined the University of South Florida in 2007 as Patel Professor of Environment in the Patel Center for Global Solutions and the Division of Integrative Biology, Department of Biology.  He has given more than 250 presentations worldwide and is the author of more than 120 scientific publications.  Currently, Dr. Crisman is actively engaged in aquatic conservation, ecosystem restoration and ecohydrology.  The latter focuses on water allocation for human and conservation purposes in sustainable ways.  Dr. Crisman's talk will focus on the current and anticipated changes on Florida's living systems from the impacts of global warming.

Jan. 9, 9am-4pm, Adult Ecology Workshop: Ferns & Epiphytes at Brooker Creek Preserve, Tarpon Springs. The Adult Ecology Workshop offers unique opportunities to explore focused topics in natural history under the guidance of noted authorities. Hands-on field and laboratory investigations are employed to teach ecology, use of taxonomic keys, and field techniques. Workshops present college-level instruction and are designed to accommodate participants with a broad range of experience.  Amateur botanists are welcome, as are those wanting to improve their current skills. Jan. 16, 9am-12pm, Guided Canoe Trip at Weedon Island Preserve at Weedon Island Preserve, 1800 Weedon Drive N.E., St. Petersburg. Explore the south canoe trail of Weedon Island Preserve and get a rare look at the aquatic ecosystems that make west-central Florida special. Jan. 16, 10am-1pm, the public is invited to attend the Southwest Florida Water Management District Conner Preserve Grand Opening. The preserve’s entrance is located approximately 3 miles east of U.S. 41 on State Road 52 in Pasco County. The event includes a ceremony, guided hikes, model airplane demonstrations, children’s activities, water quality monitoring demonstrations and more. The District purchased the 2,980-acre property in 2003 to preserve and restore this important natural habitat. Covering 123 miles of the scenic Suwannee River Wilderness Trail, the seven-day paddlefest launches from the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park and finishes at beautiful Manatee Springs State Park.  As many as 200 paddlers will be going with the flow, averaging 18 miles per day and camping on the banks of Florida ’s beautiful Suwannee River. Mote’s newest educational program, Island Quest is designed to bring out the young scientist in kids ages 8-11. Each Island Quest series includes three four-hour sessions full of first-hand science exploration on consecutive Saturdays. Island Quest includes wading into Sarasota Bay to explore watery themes such as the ocean’s motion, discovering the secrets lurking in every drop of seawater and understanding the connections among oceans animals. The program fee is $150 for each three-week session and Mote Members receive the discounted fee of $125.
