Bay Soundings’ Survey Nets Positive Feedback

In the Winter and Spring 2009 issues of Bay Soundings, readers were asked to complete a short print or online survey to help us gauge the value and content of our publication. The survey is part of our requirements for funding by the Southwest Florida Water Management District and its Basin Boards to ensure that Bay Soundings is meeting its objectives.

Thanks to all who participated!

Of 42 readers who completed the survey:

• 76% rated the overall quality of the publication as excellent; 19% as good.
• 62% rated the variety of story content as excellent; 31% as good.
• 74% agreed with the statement: “I consider Bay Soundings a credible news source about the Tampa Bay Watershed.”
• 77% rated Backbay Adventures as their favorite content section, followed by science stories (65%), human-interest profiles (37%), and 32% each for Calendar and Opinion/Commentary

Readers also offered suggestions of additional stories they would like to see, including:

• more science-based information on fish, birds and other bay animals, and ecosystems and natural communities
• habitat restoration, water quality, and research initiatives
• volunteers activities and how to get involved
• places to canoe, kayak and interact with nature.

When asked to state the purpose of Bay Soundings, the overwhelming response was to inform people about the bay, raise awareness about environmental issues, and encourage participation in bay-related activities.

We think we’re on the right track and will use your feedback in developing future issues. Please keep the comments coming! We value your opinions on Bay Soundings and strive to make it the best environmental journal possible.
