Grants Galore!
Local Organizations Fund Projects to Improve Tampa Bay

Late summer marks the start of grant application season so that local organizations and citizen groups can hit the ground running with projects that make Tampa Bay better in 2008.

The Tampa Bay Estuary Program (TBEP) will once again offer Bay Mini-Grants for bay improvement projects proposed by citizen groups and organizations in Hillsborough, Manatee and Pinellas counties. Schools, civic associations, non-profit organizations and other community groups are encouraged to apply.

Approximately $125,000 will be available for Mini-Grants with money raised through sales of the Tampa Bay Estuary specialty license plate. The maximum grant amount is $7,500, but requests for as little as $500 are considered. Projects on two key topics – air pollution and pet waste education – will be eligible for up to $10,000 each.

The deadline for submitting a grant proposal is Monday, October 1 at 3 p.m. Proposals will be evaluated by members of TBEP’s Community Advisory Committee. Grants will be awarded in mid-November and must be completed within one year. For more information, contact Misty Cladas at 727-893-2765 or visit www.tbep.org.

Southwest Florida Water Management District offers community education grants of up to $5000 to actively engage adults in water-related issues pertaining to conservation, protection and preservation. Funded by the district’s Basin Boards, the program is intended to motivate communities to get involved in water protection through various activities and educational formats.

Categories include alternative water sources, flood protection, natural systems, water conservation, water quality and watersheds. The grants are available to individuals, community groups and other government
agencies.

Deadline for submissions is Friday, August 24, at 5 p.m. with implementation scheduled for March 1 to June 30, 2008. For more information, visit http://swfwmd.state.fl.us/busines/communitygrants.

Pinellas County Environmental Fund, a partnership among Pinellas County, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, also offer grants for projects that protect, restore and enhance the natural resources of the Tampa Bay watershed. Projects should implement the on-the-ground habitat and species conservation recommendations that have been developed through the Tampa Bay Estuary Program and its related partnerships, particularly Charting the Course, the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan.

The pre-proposal deadline is Sept. 1, with full proposals due Nov.1. Application information is available online at www.pcef.org (or http://nfwf.org/programs/pcef.cfm). Only electronic pre-proposals submitted through the online pre-proposal form will be considered.
